In both the away leg in Mauritius and the home tie in Orlando, Pirates had several goals ruled out for offside. Although Riveiro did not explicitly criticise the officiating, he highlighted the recurring theme of disallowed goals.

“It’s quite amusing, really,” Riveiro remarked after the second leg. “In both games, we had numerous goals called off for offside. It seems to be a consequence of the way Disciples play.

“They employ a high defensive line and are aggressive in their marking, relying on these tactics to defend.”

Despite his concerns, Riveiro remained positive about his team’s performance. “We created plenty of scoring opportunities, particularly in the first 30 minutes.

“It was the same in the first leg, but overall, we are pleased with our performance and the fact that we didn’t concede a single goal across both games.

“That’s a significant achievement and makes things much easier moving forward.”

Maswanganyi, who wore the iconic No. 10 shirt, had an impressive first half at Orlando Stadium, scoring Pirates’ third goal with a precise strike in the 28th minute.

Riveiro explained that Maswanganyi’s substitution was a precautionary measure. “Patrick received a yellow card in the first half,” Riveiro said in an interview with Mazola Molefe on SABC Sport.

“There were several moments towards the end of the first half where the referee seemed to focus on Patrick, possibly trying to provoke a reaction.”

With Pirates already leading 3-0, Riveiro opted to bring on Makhehleni Makhaula to solidify the team’s control.

“Our aim was to minimise any chances for the opponents to make a comeback,” Riveiro added.

“By introducing Makhaula, we aimed to be more defensive and ensure a more secure result.”

In their next match, Pirates will face the winner of the tie between Jwaneng Galaxy and Namibian Premier League champions African Stars, who hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
