Race 5.

HIGHLIGHTS was carried wide approaching the home turn, but stayed on well when fifth last time out over six furlongs, just over two and a half lengths behind the winner and the form of that race has been franked. He has his first run for his new trainer, but has put in two encouraging barrier trials which suggests that he is fully settled into his new surroundings and that he should give a good account of himself here. He faces a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will get 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice. GOLDEN POINT has consistent formlines to his name and although recorded as finishing fifth last time out over 1300M, he was just 1.8L behind the winner, when making good late progress. From his kinder draw five, he seems likely to turn in another honest performance today. PYRMONT has finished fourth in three of his last four outings, the latest over seven furlongs, just under two and a half lengths back from the victor. He was slow away that day, but finished off his race strongly and from his wide gate sixteen, he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the frontrunners over the closing stages.

Race 6.

ICE IN VANCOUVER hung out on the home turn before hitting the front only to be run out of it late to end up in fourth place last time out over six furlongs, just over two and a half lengths back from the winner, but that was at a stronger center. On that effort, he should enjoy the drop in distance and having cracked pole position and with having 2kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice, the gelding is made the best bet on the day’s program. TORO TORO has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three runs, culminating with a 1.2L victory in his last start over five furlongs. He jumped awkwardly and was bumped shortly after the start that day, before coming the widest into the home straight and also hanging in over the latter stages. He will have to negotiate draw eight, but he looks to be the obvious danger to the top choice. HIDDEN HAIL went from jump to wire when showing solid improvement to win his last start over six furlongs by 1.2L. He will have to overcome a wider gate fourteen, but nevertheless should be involved in the finish.

Race 7.

POINT COUNTERPOINT has won two of his last four outings, the latest over this journey by a short-head. He raced up with the leaders and then kicked clear of the opposition at the 250M mark and then held off all the late challengers courageously. He has his peak run since returning from a 24 week break and faces a wide draw fifteen, but he should use his early gate speed to shift across without expending too much energy. NOTABADIDEA stayed on well when showing marked improvement to finish third in his latest outing over a mile, just under half a length back from the winner. He jumps from a kinder gate six and should keep the top pick honest. REPOSITION takes a drop in distance after finishing third in his last two runs over further, but was carried wide approaching the home turn before ending up 1.7L adrift of the winner last time out over 2100M. From his cozy gate four, he should be included in all bets.

Race 8.

KINJINA is a speedy 5yr old mare taking on boys, but she missed out on her hat-trick when finishing fourth last time out over five furlongs, 1.8L behind the winner and was immediately moved stables and rested for 40 weeks. She returns here after having had the benefit of a barrier trial, which he won. She will have to beat a wide draw sixteen, but will have 3kgs removed from his back thanks to his claiming apprentice to aid his cause. The fact that her connections have brought her back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that she still has something more to offer them. FOXSTORM has finished second in four of his last five starts, the latest when just over one length off the winner over 1100M and the form of that race has stood up well with three runners from that contest subsequently winning. He shifted out over the last 100M, but the objection against him was overruled. He gets draw seven and should be right up there in the mix. CHELSEA REIGN is another 5yr old mare in the race. She came the widest of them all into the home stretch before finishing strongly, albeit too late, to end up in fifth spot last time out over five furlongs, 2.2L behind the winner. She is drawn one outside the latter and will have the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice.
