Race 5

ANETHOLE turned last into the home straight and had to come three wide, before running on strongly to finish second last time out over five furlongs, just a neck behind the winner, when returning from a 19 week break. On that effort, he should enjoy the extra ground on offer here and from gate six, he looks to be the one to side with today.

CASTLEBAR ROAD missed out on his hat-trick when finishing second last time out over 1110M, just over a half length back from the winner. He was returning from a longer 25 week absence that day, but he attracted plenty of betting support, suggesting that he had shown good work at home. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate thirteen, but he is a speedy sort who should be able to work his way across without using up too much energy.

KANALAIDE followed up his penultimate run victory over seven furlongs with a somewhat disappointing eighth place finish next time out over seven furlongs, just under five and a half lengths adrift of the victor, but the form of that race has been franked. The gelding gets gate seven and will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

Race 6

I’M ON BREAK showed solid improvement to win his last start over seven furlongs by just under one and a half lengths. He went from jump to wire that day, staying on well over the latter stages, suggesting that he will have no issue with the extra ground on offer here. Despite a wideish gate eight, he is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card.

BARELLAN BANDIT is drawn one inside the top choice and won his penultimate outing over 1750M and then finished third over today’s mile journey next time out, three lengths adrift of the winner, but he overraced in the early stages and then came four wide into the home stretch, so that effort was encouraging. He should be competitive in this line-up.

FANMALIA has won two of his last three runs and jumped awkwardly before winning a short-head last time out over 1300M when returning from a 23 week rest. He timed his run well that day and from draw ten, he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the frontrunners over the closing stages of the contest.

Race 7

MAJORITY is a 4yr old filly taking on the boys, but she was returning from a 26 week break when finishing second in her penultimate start over 1110M and then made the expected improvement to win her last start over six furlongs by some one and a half lengths, despite shifting out over the closing stages. She faces a wide draw twelve, but she should be doing her best work late.

SINGLE CROWN jumped awkwardly when finishing seventh last time out over 1300M, five lengths back from the winner when returning from a 43 week absence, but he has finished second in a subsequent barrier trial. The fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them. From a far kinder draw three, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

SURF SONIC is seldom far off the action and although recorded as finishing eighth last time out over 1350M, he was just over three and a half lengths off the winner and he has won a subsequent barrier trial. He jumps from a wideish gate eight, but the blinkers are removed for the first time and if this move proves to be successful, he should give a good account of himself here.

Race 8

The day’s best bet, OSTRACISED won his maiden race in his penultimate run over five furlongs and then finished second next time out over the same trip, just over one and a half lengths behind the winner when returning from a 20 week break, but he was slow away that day and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. The gelding will have to negotiate draw eleven, but nevertheless could prove difficult to topple here.

ONE PENNY is a 3yr old filly taking on males, but she goes for her hat-trick after two wins over this sprint distance, the latest by just over one and a half lengths. She is drawn one outside the top pick, but does have her peak run after returning from a 27 week break and looks the immediate danger to the former.

MR CRUISE has won two of his last four starts, the latest by 0.8L over the five furlongs. He came four wide into the home straight, but finished off his race well and was also reported to have been cut into during the race. He gets gate eight and should be involved in the finish.
