Sundowns vs Pitso, Part II

Every great story always has a subsequent episode that takes the storyline to another level. The Sundowns vs Coach Pitso story looks like is far from over.

Both parties are still at loggerheads regarding alleged unfulfilled contractual obligations by Mosimane while the Atteridgerville incident is still on everyone’s mind.

Manqoba Mngqithi took the first leg in Cairo with a late Morena goal. Mosimane knew he needed to win or least earn a draw in Johannesburg to stay in a healthy position in a tightly contested Group A.

Again, the Sundowns team proved to be a force to be reckoned with when a first-half Peter Shalulile strike gave the South Africans full three points to open a six-point lead at the top the group.

Sundowns will be travelling to Sudan to face Al Hilal on the 19th where they need just a draw to confirm their qualification as group winners.

AmaZulu humbled in Algeria

ES Setif humbled ‘Usuthu olumabheshu ankone’ by claiming a 2-0 over the KZN side in Algeria. Benni McCarthy would lament the way they defended in both goals as his side were caught in typical Champions League-style quick transition.

On both goals, Setif turned over possession to launch quick counter-attacks which caught the Usuthu defence at sixes and sevens. The Usuthu mentor also lamented the officiating his side received on the day, as the fouls and the cards went against his side.

They also missed an open net chance in the 2nd half when defender Mbongeni Gumede took a heavy touch instead of tapping it in.

Pirates grab another CAFCC win

The Mighty Bucs moved two points clear at the top of Group B in the CAFCC when they defeated Eswatini giants, Royal Leopards, 3-0 at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers were in control of the game from the start to finish but were not as clinical as the first leg where they won the reverse fixture, 6-2, in Mbombela.

Nedbank Cup

Summerfield Dynamos remain the only amateur side left in the competition as they defeated Black Eagles, 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium.

Fellow amateurs Mathaithai were given a 6-0 drubbing by 2015 champions, Sundowns, while Sinenkani were beaten 3-0 at home by GladAfrica Championship side, TTM.

Baroka defeated 2019 champions, TS Galaxy, on penalties to progress to the next round after a stalemate, AmaTuks and Marumo Gallants, needing penalties to progress to the quarter-finals.

Royal AM defeated Swallows FC 1-0 for the second time in a space of a week. Again, it was a late show as AM midfielder, Kabelo Mahlasela, scored an 80th-minute goal to give ‘Spice People’ a Thwihli Thwahla kind of a win.

The full list of quarter-finalists: Sundowns, University of Pretoria, SuperSport United, Royal AM, Summerfield Dynamos, Baroka, TTM and Marumo Gallants.
