Desh Parthab examines some of the stats you need to keep in mind before taking your Champions League bets this week, featuring Ronaldo's record against Atletico, Chelsea's defence and Juve's home form.

Juventus - Champions League

A star-studded quartet booked their place in the next round of the Champions League last week. Bayern were 4 nil up just past the half-hour mark. Despite going down 1 nil on the night, Liverpool progressed to the quarters for the fourth time in their previous five seasons. M

Mmanchester City also progressed, making them the only English side to reach the quarters in each of the previous five seasons. Karim Benzema’s hat-trick heroics fired Real Madrid past PSG, which begs the question: who will stand up and be counted this week?

Fortress Allianz

Juventus have won each of their last 6 home games in the UEFA Champions League. The addition of January signing, Dusan Vlahovic, has added another dimension to their attack and given them firepower when they needed it most. The forward bagged four goals in his first six appearances for the club (across all competitions), which included a debut Champions League goal – the quickest in the history of the competition.

Great wall of Mendy

Edouard Mendy has had to make just 5 saves for his 5 clean sheets in the tournament this season. That brings his tally to 14 clean sheets in just 18 Champions League appearances for the club. Under the tutelage of Tuchel, Chelsea have equalled a joint record in the competition for the fewest games needed (14) to record their 10th clean sheet under him.

Ronaldo’s Atlètico record

Manchester United’s talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is no stranger to Atlètico from his nine seasons in the Spanish capital playing for their city rivals. The Champions League all-time top scorer has squared off against Diego Simeone’s side on five previous occasions in the UCL knockout stages & helped his side eliminate Atlètico in every instance – including Madrid’s competition success. The Portuguese attacker must rank Atleti among his favourite opponents, having netted 25 career goals against them – only notching more against Sevilla (27).

Haller key for Ajax

Ajax have won all 3 of their home games in the UCL this season – they haven’t won four in a row this decade. The Dutch outfit has scored a minimum of two goals in each of their seven Champions League fixtures this season, scoring 22 goals in total. Half of those came from Sebastien Haller, who simultaneously became the quickest player to reach 11 Champions League goals, needing just seven games reach the milestone. The forward has emulated the performances of another sharpshooter in the Dutch side’s ranks. Anthony has equalled Haller shot for shot in the UCL this season. Their 22 attempts each are considerable, however, Anthony required just six UCL appearances to do so, compared to Haller’s seven.

Suarez to have impact against United?

Despite being benched last time out, Luis Suárez has notched up more Champions League minutes this season than fellow Atlético forwards Antoine Griezmann and João Félix. Suárez appeared in each of the Spanish sides six group stage matches where he mustered just two shots on target, during that period. The former Liverpool hitman is yet to score from open play in the European competition this season but may just come back to haunt his old rivals.
