Proteas captain Temba Bavuma might be fit enough to play in the highly anticipated semi-final showdown against Australia on Thursday.

This follows reports of Bavuma taking part of Monday’s training session with ease and without any noticeable discomfort.

Bavuma sustained a right hamstring strain during the match against Afghanistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday night. He then struggled to bat, prompting speculation that he could miss the semi-final against Australia at Eden Gardens.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) released a statement saying that Bavuma was assessed by the Proteas medical team and showed improvement overnight.

“We will continuously assess his progress through the management plan over the next few days towards giving him the best chance to play on Thursday.” said CSA in a statement.

Sports editor of RapportSA Tinus van Staden took to social media, saying Bavuma trained without much dicomfort and bated for almost an hour.

The Proteas medical team clarified that the work Bavuma was putting in on Monday’s training session was not for a fitness test but merely “part of the rehabilitation strategies of the recovery plan.”

The Proteas will be playing against Australia in the second semi-final, on Thursday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and the ultimate winner will then progress through to the final against either India or New Zealand.
