The Proteas’ embarrassing loss to the Netherlands in a 2023 Cricket World Cup encounter was met with an unsurprising response from the South African cricket community.

Two matches into the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India, the Proteas’ men’s team had won over local skeptics on their journey to finally winning a world title at the senior level. It took a shambolic effort against the Netherlands for a lot of South Africans to revert to type and lose faith in the team, though no one could blame them.

Naturally, many went on to social media to vent their frustration after what was an inexcusably woeful performance that came out of nowhere on the back of the remarkably dominant wins over Sri Lanka and Australia respectively.

Riaan Holtzhausen: “Beat Australia can’t beat Netherlands yeer yaphoxa le team, back to choking.. England on Saturday don’t see us winning that one also.”

Bonga Gotyana: “Beat Australia can’t beat Netherlands yeer yaphoxa le team, back to choking.. England on Saturday don’t see us winning that one also.”

@Gretchen_Ndou: “Y’all and Bafana-bafana same WhatsApp group.”

@DeanOelsch: Here we go. The real Proteas finally arrived at the World Cup.”

@sboshmafu: One thing about the Proteas? They will bring you back to reality.”

@skalabrak: I think Jan van Riebeek is going to again get the blame for the Proteas losing to the Netherlands!”

@dbbovey: Just when you’re starting to care again, the Proteas really know how to nip that in the bud.”
