Below we’ll take a look at three timeless T20 International innings from years gone by at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead. The aim? To help you decide where to sit in order to maximise your chances of catching R100 000!

How does it work? Simply be present at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead for any of the three T20 Internationals against Australia between 30 August and 3 September 2023. If you take a clean, one-handed catch in the crowd off any six hit during the three matches you’ll bag R100k!

That’s not a share of R100 000… R100k will be awarded for EVERY clean, one-handed catch taken in the crowd! Ts and Cs apply. Let’s get into it!

Morne van Wyk – 114* (70) v West Indies

Morne van Wyk – who at the time of this innings captained the Hollywoodbets Dolphins – was a naturally attacking opening batsman who was lethal square of the wicket. On this balmy evening at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead, van Wyk was at his belligerent best, plundering 114 runs off just 70 balls. The innings laid the groundwork for a South African victory, denying the West Indies a whitewash after the islanders won the first two T20 Internationals.

He would go on to find the boundary 16 times in this innings, hitting nine fours and seven sixes. As you’d expect from van Wyk, all of these maximums were scored square of the wicket, with two being hit off side and the balance all being hit on the leg side.

Have a look where van Wyk hit his sixes in this innings below:

Morne van Wyk - Sixes Hit
Van Wyk was particularly strong square of the wicket. On this occasion, seven of his sixes were hit square of the wicket on the leg side.

Yuvraj Singh – 58 (16) v England

A truly unforgettable innings by Indian legend Yuvraj Singh back in the 2007 T20 World Cup – or the ICC World Twenty20 as it was known back then. He etched his name into the history books after helping himself to 36 runs off the penultimate over of India’s innings, haplessly delivered by a young Stuart Broad – a six hit for every ball delivered that over.

This wasn’t even his highest score of the tournament. That would come in the semi-final against Australia where he pillaged 70 in 30 balls (also in Durban) against an attack that included the likes of Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson.

India would go on to beat Pakistan in the final. And while Yuvraj didn’t quite hit his straps in that game, the likes of Gautam Gambhir and a young Rohit Sharma piled on the runs while Irfan Pathan’s strangle job with the ball helped keep a dangerous Pakistan line-up quiet as they fell agonising runs short of India’s 157/5.

The tournament, however, will forever be remembered for Yuvraj’s innings against England. Look at which parts of Hollywoodbets Kingsmead that inning’s sixes travelled to below:

Yuvraj Singh - Sixes Hit
Hitting seven sixes in this innings, the only one that didin't come that Stuart Broad over came in the fourth ball of the final over, delivered by Andrew Flintoff. Yuvraj would be dismissed the next ball, caught on the long on boundary.

Quinton de Kock – 65 (22) v England

Our third and final entry here is Quinton de Kock’s effort against England in February 2020 – the last T20I played at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium before the covid-enforced lockdown. And while the Proteas lost the match, the encounter ended up being a modern classic. 406 runs scored, 14 wickets taken and an unforgettable knock from de Kock.

His 65 came off just 22 balls, with the captain on the day striking at a ludicrous 295. In fact, 73 per cent of his total score came from clearing the boundary – eight sixes in total. Unsurprisingly, all but one of these were scored on the leg side.

Check out where his sixes were hit below:

Quinton de Kock - Sixes Hit
This is typical of de Kock, who simply loves clearing the rope on the leg side. While this wasn't quite his best T20I score, it certainly reamains one of his most memorable knocks in the format.

Square of the wicket is the way to go

Judging by the above three innings, square of the wicket looks to be your best bet if you’re on the hunt for the R100 000! The famous grass bank below the East Stand could be the place to be. Unencumbered by stairs and seats in the stands, you’ll be able to move around freely and settle beneath the ball before hopefully executing the perfect one-handed catch!
