South Africa claimed their T20I series against England but their short follow-up against Ireland will test their mentality.

The Proteas got a big win in the third T20I, showing they can beat a top side in a big match.

Now the test will be avoiding letting the levels slip and allowing an upset against a dangerous Ireland team.

Ireland have quality in their ranks but it would not be acceptable for the Proteas to allow an upset.

Winning major trophies will only happen if the Proteas can beat not only the best in the world but also avoid upsets or even a significant loss of momentum triggered by an easy win.

The T20 World Cup is first and foremost the quest for the semi-finals through the Super 12s.

Last time out South Africa won four of their five matches but still missed out on the semi-finals so they will be well aware that there is little margin for error.

It will benefit the Proteas if Ireland lift their level for this series after an inconsistent showing in their home series against New Zealand.

Ireland aren’t playing at home giving the series a further tournament feel but it is unclear what kind of crowd will turn up and how much that will affect the energy levels of the players.

The two-match T20I series does show that there are attempts being made to ensure the team gets the best possible preparation for the T20 World Cup even as other obligations create pressure.

Ultimately the space was available with the Tests against England getting underway later in August and a few players set to benefit from more time in the middle.

Whether that is the returning Rilee Rossouw or promising young prospect Tristan Stubbs, the Proteas have a few who deserve their shot at making a strong case to go to the big dance.

The side have played very well in England but need to get the most out of this assignment.
