England

England were able to employ all or nothing cricket thanks to the rain and it came off for them in spectacular fashion.

Despite a loss of wickets early England kept the hammer down and have their allrounders to thank for their defendable total.

Sam Curran made a strong case for his continued inclusion in the ODI squad going forward with crucial contributions.

Reece Topley is a bowler who has haunted South Africa before and he did more damage at Old Trafford and snatched the impetus for his team.

South Africa

The Proteas battled well with the ball but couldn’t finish the job and were then blown away in their chase.

South Africa can content themselves with the fact that such collapses have become a rarer occurance but the tendency to fold under pressure is a big concern.

Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi have been weapons for the Proteas but their spinners were badly exposed in Manchester.

It was surprising to see Aiden Markram’s bowling not utilised but then he is usually given the ball when the opposition get away to a good start.

Verdict: England

England should now clinch the series.
