The West Indies arrive as one of the few sides in world cricket with more distractions than the Proteas.

The latest chapters of the Windies permacrisis sees certain players left out in the cold and some new blood brought in.

With their WTC hopes dead in the water this series takes on a different quality for the Proteas who are out to build for the next Test Championship cycle.

Shukri Conrad is at the helm as coach and CSA have promised more responsibility and more accountability from the top trainer.

We also have a new skipper in play as Temba Bavuma takes over from Dean Elgar in a moderately controversial move.

There is a good chance that Aiden Markram will be returning to opening the batting alongside Elgar with only Tony de Zorzi available as another potential opener.

The West Indies are being forced through another transition but experienced hands like Kraigg Brathwaite are around to lead.

Jason Holder could be a difference-maker with bat and ball for a West Indies team that will need heroes.

Their quicks pose a real threat to the wobbly Proteas batting but they will need to find their lines and lengths on the SuperSport Park wicket.

Shannon Gabriel’s return also gives them more experience in the bowling department with him and Kemar Roach reunited as a potential new-ball pairing.

Verdict: South Africa 1/4

A loss would spark an unwanted inquest for a side still reeling after a disastrous Australian tour.
