PREVIEW: Pakistan and Black Caps get first T20I underway in Lahore

Pakistan host New Zealand in a bumper T20I series that should throw up plenty of thrills and spills.

New Zealand are honouring their commitment to tour after an abandoned visit in 2021.

Pakistan vs New Zealand | First T20I | Friday 14 April 2023 | Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore | 18:00

Pakistan 47/100 | Tie 25/1 | NZ 25/1

Pakistan have their key men front and centre for this one, with both Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan looking to be in good touch in the PSL.

Saim Ayub might just get his chance after impressing in the PCB’s showpiece T20 tournament.

Pakistan have won five of their last six completed T20Is against New Zealand despite never having played a match against the Black Caps in this format in their own country.

Shaheen Afridi should be out to prove his fitness but might have to wait for his chance, given the form of Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

New Zealand don’t have Kane Williamson, Devon Conway and a further seven stars who are in the IPL.

As such, there are opportunities for new faces to stand up and be counted for New Zealand with domestic performers Chad Bowes and Cole McConchie.

There will be a big role for leg-spinner Ish Sodhi who will be a leader in this young attack.

Henry Shipley has bowled very well in seam-friendly conditions, but his first trip to Pakistan might prove a baptism of fire.

Verdict: Pakistan

Pakistan really should thump an under-strength New Zealand.
