South Africa vs West Indies | First ODI | Thursday 16 March 2023 | Buffalo Park, East London | 13:00

To Win Match
South Africa 29/100 | Tie 25/1 | West Indies 26/10

The Proteas visit East London for a rare One Day International at Buffalo Park, the first in six years.

A lack of internationals at the venue might act as a leveller as will the fact that the match will be played at sea-level, a familiar environment for their foes.

Janneman Malan has been left out of the squad with left-handers Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickleton favoured. Malan is not the only suprise omission with Aiden Markram also missing out.

Quinton de Kock comes into the series fresh will open the batting alongside either Reeza Hendricks or Temba Bavuma.

Gerald Coetzee did enough with the ball in the Test series to earn a place in the squad and is one of six pace options in the group, including allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo. When it comes to spin the injury to Keshav Maharaj opens the door for Imaad Fortuin to build on a solid SA20.

Shai Hope leads the West Indies and will have to make a call on taking the gloves with Nicholas Pooran also in the squad.

Akeal Hosain is an underrated talent and an expert at cutting off the flow of runs with his left-arm orthodox spin.

Leg-spinner Yannic Cariah could also be in line for selection but they might favour pace.

Alzarri Joseph should be the first name on the team sheet after a good Test series.

Verdict: South Africa 29/100

South Africa should be able to best the West Indies in East London.
