Australia posted a hefty total of 371 for six on the back of centuries from opener David Warner and captain Steven Smith.

At 265 for six inside 38 overs in reply, the Proteas were close to conceding a first loss in the five-match series.

Miller and Phelukwayo, though, successfully combated challenging circumstances en route to an unbroken 107-run alliance in 70 deliveries for the seventh wicket.

The Dolphins duo shared 14 fours and eight sixes, ensuring the Proteas won with four wickets and four deliveries to spare.

Miller’s 118 not out from 79 deliveries yielded the Player of the Match award. Phehlukwayo finished with 42 not out from 39.

“It’s a special moment – it was really nice to see the team home. It was a great wicket. I thought if we batted 50 overs we’d get pretty close. Andile was really nervous, then he got his confidence. I just told him to remember the basics,” enthused Miller after the match.

Captain Faf du Plessis added: “I’d rank that up there with the best win I’ve been involved in. Most teams would think they are dead and buried. So proud of David – over the moon for him.

“It took a freakish innings to get us across the line. An amazing knock. It looked impossible. It takes an innings of bravery, Dave did that. Andile was smoking a few over extra cover.”

The result gave South Africa an unassailable three-nil series lead. The hosts eventually completed a five-nil series scoreline with two more wins in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
