There were a number of strong performances in the KZN side with Momentum Proteas star Chloe Tryon leading the way with the bat scoring 334 runs across the five matches which included four half centuries and a top score of 91 against the Imperial Lions. She finished with an average of 66 from the five matches.

Skipper of the side Nondumiso Shangase registered the only century for the side, scored in their final match against Easterns where she made 104 not out in a match won by the KZN Coastal Women by 114 runs.

The wickets were shared throughout the week with the side bagging two five wicket hauls. Momentum Proteas spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was the first with 5/17 against the Imperial Lions and then Jade de Figueredo took 5/31 in their final match against Easterns.

The week started off with a six wicket defeat to the Senwes Dragons Women and the fortunes didn’t change for Angelique Taai and her team when the Six Gun Grill Western Province Women’s side handed them a 42 run defeat on day two.

It was the morale boosting ten run win over the Imperial Lions Women’s side that proved to be the galvanising factor as they went on to beat the Titans Women by 84 runs on the fourth day and then rounded out the week with a commanding 114 run win over Easterns on Thursday.

Coach Taai was full of praise for her group of players that managed to turn their fortunes around after a difficult start to the week.

“I am very proud of the ladies for bouncing back after losing our two first games,” Taai said. “We had to go back to the drawing board and identify areas we need to improve on as a team.

“They showed character against Gauteng and kept calm under pressure. The win boosted their confidence and they kept the momentum going into our last two games.

“The team has learned a lot in the past week. It was just amazing to see that all the batters contribute. The bowling unit was class and did an amazing job for the team.

“The team is moving in the right direction and it’s onwards and upwards from here on out.”

CEO OF KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom said he was encouraged by the results from the women’s side and is excited for the future.

“Our Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal Women’s side showed resilience to bounce back from their two losses at the beginning of the tournament and we are very proud of Angelique and her side,” Strydom said.

“There were some strong performances from our Momentum Proteas and they led the way which is important as we continue to strengthen our women’s provincial side.

“Despite a few injuries to key players the side showed how much they have improved over the years and we are excited to see what happens in the future.”
