Race 5

The day’s best bet, AMATHUBA is a filly taking on the boys, but she has finished second in two of her last three starts, the latest over six furlongs, two lengths behind the winner at this track. when battling all the way down to the wire. She has cracked pole position and will have 2kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice to aid her cause.

REATEROS has only had the two runs to date and made the expected improvement to finish second last time out over six furlongs, 0.8L back from the winner, but he overraced in the early and middle stages that day and then came four wide into the home stretch, so that effort was commendable. He jumps from gate six and gets the services of ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH came three wide into the home straight when finishing sixth last time out over seven furlongs, four and a half lengths adrift from the winner and the form of that race has been franked. The gelding will have his peak run after returning from an 18 week break and should be involved in the finish.

Race 6

The late scratching of a few of the leading contenders in this race has resulted in this looking like a tricky contest with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. The tentative first choice goes to OUTAHAND who had his consistency rewarded with a victory last time out over ten furlongs when putting 4.3L between himself and the opposition. He sat just behind the leaders that day and then hit the front as he entered the home straight, effectively putting the race to bed at that point. He gets a wideish draw nine, but on the plus side, he will have 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice.

AKAHATA was slow away and found himself towards the rear of the field before finding a powerful finish to win his last outing over a mile by 1.8L. He is drawn one inside the top pick and ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena retains the ride.

TINNIE WINNIE is a 4yr old filly taking on males, but she followed up her penultimate run victory over 1900M with a third place finish last time out over nine furlongs, 8.3L adrift of the victor. She was making good late progress over the latter stages that day and should enjoy the extra ground on offer here. She will have to negotiate a wide gate thirteen, but she should be doing her best work late.

Race 7

Two 3yr old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and secure the exacta, but the day’s value bet, MADIBA’S QUEEN is taken to lead the field home. She has finished closer to the winner in each of her last three runs, the latest when second over 1900M, just one length adrift of the victor, this despite being slow away and hanging out from the 500M mark, before finally coming five wide into the home straight. She will have to overcome a wide gate thirteen but nevertheless looks to be the one that they all have to beat.

CHENIN has only had the two runs to date, finishing second on both occasions, the latest over a mile, eight lengths behind the winner. She jumps from draw eight and will be hoping to go one better today.

BIG SHORT had good form before being a tad disappointing last time out when finishing sixth over a mile, seven and a half lengths off the winner and from a handy gate three, he will be looking to bounce back to his better form today.

Race 8

As opposed to the previous race, a 3yr old filly and a 5yr mare could dominate the finish to his contest and complete the exacta, but ARBITRATION is given the nod for top spot. She had finished second in her two runs prior to winning her maiden race last time out over six furlongs by 1.3l. She jumped awkwardly that day and was hampered at the 200M pole, followed by coming three-wide into the home straight, before staying on well over the latter stages. In addition, her jockey put up 0.5kgs overweight. She has finished third in a subsequent barrier trail and from pole position, she should be right up there when they hit the line.

ZOO STATION had to weave her way through traffic from some way back to win her last start over seven furlongs by a head. That was her second win from her last three outings and although facing the widest draw of them all in gate sixteen, she will get 1.5kgs taken off her back for the service of her claiming apprentice.

MARANOA had solid form before disappointing to end up in fourteenth place last time out over twelve furlongs, 12.8L behind the winner and was immediately rested for 41 weeks. He returns here after having had two encouraging barrier trials and the fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them. From a cozy draw four, he should be included in all bets.
