Race 5

AWESOME LAD has finished second in four of his last five starts and third in the other, the latest over 1500M, just under a half-length behind the winner. He struck the front at the 250M mark that day, only to be run out of it very late. He is drawn the widest of them all, but that is gate eight, and he will be hoping for a change in fortune to go one better today. She such, he is made the best bet on the day’s card.

FIVE CROWNS goes for his hat-trick after victories over six furlongs and the latest over seven furlongs by a head. He was returning from a 12-week rest that day and had to be held up at the 200M pole, before finishing his race off well. The gelding has a handy draw three and could turn out to be the biggest danger to the top choice.

LEMAIRE is seldom far off the action, finishing third last time out over 1500M, 1.2L behind the winner, but he had to be severely held up at the 350M mark that day, so should have finished closer to the winner than he officially did. He is drawn one inside the latter, and with better luck in running, he should be involved in the finish.

Race 6

KICKATORP showed solid improvement to end up in second place last time out over seven furlongs, just a head back from the winner, when returning from a 39-week spell. He jumped awkwardly that day, but recovered quickly to race just behind the leaders, before taking over at the top of the home straight, only to be nabbed in the shadow of the post. From a useful draw two, he looks to be the one to side with here.

SEMPREINTE is the stable companion to the top choice who finished eleventh last time out over seven furlongs, 7.8L adrift of the victor, but he was reported to have made an abnormal respiratory noise, so that effort is best ignored. He has his peak run after returning from a 20-week break and although facing a wideish draw eight, he makes a solid back-up for the yard.

DUKE OF GORDON has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three runs, the latest when fifth over seven furlongs, 1.8L adrift of the victor. The gelding was returning from a 19 week absence that day and jumped awkwardly, finding himself at the back of the field, but delivered a powerful finish over the closing stages. He will have to negotiate gate nine, but he should be doing his best work late.

Race 7

YANKEES is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she won over five furlongs when making her debut and followed that up with a seventh-place finish next time out over 1100M, 2.3L off the winner. She stayed on well that day, and the form of that contest has been franked. She returns from a 21-week rest, up has posted an encouraging barrier trial, and although facing a wide gate ten, she should give the males a good run for their money.

BOOMSONG had consistent formlines to his credit before being somewhat disappointing in finishing fifth last time out over six furlongs, just over four and a half lengths behind the winner, but he jumped awkward in that contest and then overraced early, pulling himself to the front and understandably, had nothing to offer over the latter stages. He was immediately rested for 20 weeks and returns here after having two barrier trials, winning them both. He is drawn one outside the top pick, but he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.

KING OF NAPLES followed up his penultimate run victory over five furlongs with a second-place finish next time out over the same c&d, 0.8L behind the winner. Despite a wide gate nine and should be included in all bets.

Race 8

The day’s value bet, OCEANS ONE had his consistency rewarded with his maiden win last time out over 1100M by 1.3l, this despite racing three wide without cover. He takes on stronger here, but he gets a cozy draw three and may well be up to the task at hand.

UZZIAH won his penultimate start over five furlongs and then finished second next time out when making good late progress to end up just one and a half lengths behind the winner. He has his peak run after returning from an 11-week rest, and although drawn wide in gate ten, he is a speedy sort who should be able to work his way across without using up too much gas.

ANYTHINK GOES put his disappointing penultimate run over twelve furlongs in the Queensland Derby (Group 1) behind him when finishing sixth last time out over seven furlongs, just under two and a half lengths adrift of the victor, when returning from a 21-week break. He jumped awkwardly that day and then overraced in the middle stages, so that effort was commendable. From draw eight and in far less company, he should not be lightly overlooked.
