Pragmatic Play - Roulette Dealer

This week we shine the spotlight on Pragmatic Play’s Roulette selection.

You can find all sorts of games from Pragmatic Play across Hollywoodbets’ mobile site and website. From a massive catalogue of Spina Zonke (also make sure to check out our Prize Drops promotion) games to a range of gameshows, table games and Asian-style casino games.

This week, however, we’ll be featuring Pragmatic’s roulette offering. Currently, there are four tables available, each of which caters to different preferences and budgets. These are:

  1. Roulette Azure features a stock-standard European Roulette setup. As the name implies, the studio’s design features a premium blue-coloured look and feel and mimics the experience you’d expect in a land-based casino. The minimum bet at this table is R1 and the maximum bet is R40 000.
  2. Roulette Ruby is very similar to its Azure cousin. There are a few immaterial differences. The studio features a beautiful ruby-coloured theme with the croupier alone in the room, whereas Azure features a few dealers in the background working at Blackjack tables.
  3. VIP Roulette – The Club is a premium table where the minimum bet for each round is R10 as opposed to R1 on Ruby and Azure.
  4. Auto Roulette is just an automated version of the game that doesn’t feature a croupier. The game is also rendered in 3D and not hosted in a real studio. Keep in mind that this is a far quicker experience with new rounds taking place every few seconds.

Roulette rundown

Let’s run the rule on the basics of Roulette. Unlike some of the more complicated casino games out there (we’re looking at you, Poker), Roulette is an easy game for a beginner to wrap his or her head around.

When it comes to the wheel, there are two variations: the European wheel (contains 37 numbers, 0 through to 36) and the American wheel (contains 38 numbers, 0, 00 to 36). That’s really the only difference. For the sake of this piece, we’ll only focus on the European Wheel format.

The numbers on the roulette wheel are coloured red and black and alternate around its circumference. While these colours and numbers appear to be placed randomly around the wheel, they actually follow a very specific sequence.

Once you have placed your bet, the dealer or croupier spins the wheel before sending the ball around a groove that surrounds the wheel. It’s important to note that the ball will always be sent in the opposite direction to the way the wheel is spun. The ball will eventually lose momentum and come to rest in one of the numbered segments on the wheel.

The croupier will place a dolly – usually shaped like a king or queen chess piece – on the winning number before winning bets are paid out.

Getting to grips with the Roulette wheel

There are a few important things to understand about the Roulette Wheel:

  • The European roulette wheel contains 37 numbers, 1-36 with a supplementary 0.
  • The numbers between 1-10 as well as 19-28; the odd numbers are coloured red and the even numbers are coloured black.
  • The numbers between 11-18 as well as 29-36; the odd numbers are coloured black and the even numbers are coloured red.
  • The 0 (zero) is coloured green.

Understanding the table

This is the green felt area where you can place your bets. There are a few important things to keep an eye out for:

  • Inside bets are taken on the inside of the green, red and black coloured grid. This grid starts with a green “0” on the left and ends with a red “34”, a black “35” and a red “36” on the left.
  • As the name implies, outside bets are taken on the outside of the abovementioned grid.

Take a look at the game’s layout below.

Inside vs Outside bets

There are two categories of bets available with Roulette: inside and outside bets. Think of them this way:

  1. Inside bets: these are bets placed on numbers or combinations that appear within the central grid of the table.
  2. Outside bets: these are bets placed on number combinations or patterns that appear outside of the table’s central grid.

Inside bets

  1. Straight up: This refers to taking a bet on any single number. Pays out at 35/1.
  2. Split: This is a bet placed on the horizontal or vertical line between two numbers. Pays out at 17/1.
  3. Street bet: This covers any three numbers in a horizontal row.  For example: 3, 2 and 1 or 12, 11 and 10. Pays out at 11/1.
  4. Corner bet: This is a wager placed where four numbers intersect. For example 4, 5 8 and 7. Pays out at 8/1.
  5. Top line or line bet: Here you place your chip at the top intersection of two columns and covers all six numbers in both columns. For example, 3, 2, 1, 6, 5 and 4. Pays out at 5/1.

Outside bets

  1. Column bet: This requires you to place your chip in one of the three boxes at the extreme right of the table labelled “2 to 1”. This bet covers all 12 numbers on the row except the zero. Pays out at 2/1.
  2. Dozen: As the name implies, this covers 12 numbers. To take this bet, place your chip on one of the three boxes labelled “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, or “3rd 12” directly beneath the red and black number grid. Pays out a 2/1.
  3. Red/Black: A beginner’s favourite! Place a chip on either the red or black diamond at the bottom of the table. This bet covers the 18 numbers associated with each colour and doesn’t include the green “0”. Pays out at 1/1.
  4. Even/Odd: Another good one for beginners. As the name implies, select whether the ball will come to rest in an odd or even picket. This bet does not cover the “0”. Pays out at 1/1.
  5. 1-18/19-36: Place your chip in either of these boxes to cover the first or second set of 18 numbers. The “0” is not covered. Pays out at 1/1.
