Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, made the tough decision to favour the 38-year-old Neuer over Ter Stegen, a move that left the Barcelona keeper visibly disappointed.

Ter Stegen shared his thoughts in an interview with BILD, expressing his dissatisfaction while acknowledging the necessity to respect the coach’s choice.

“It is not easy to find yourself in a situation that you had hoped would be different,” Ter Stegen admitted. “You have to accept and respect the coach’s decision, even if I don’t agree with it. I try to be at the best level to show my performance.”

Reflecting on whether this was the hardest blow of his career, the 32-year-old did not hesitate. “For sure. It’s an important event. I would have loved to have played, I make no secret of that.

“I think I had a lot of arguments in my favour. So it wasn’t an easy decision for the coach. But I have to accept it.”

Despite his setback, Ter Stegen remained hopeful about his future with the national team. With Neuer six years his senior, the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico presents a possible opportunity for Ter Stegen to finally take centre stage for Germany at a major tournament.

“It’s still a bit far away. You don’t know what’s going to happen in football,” he remarked. “I want to give my best in all situations over the next two years. I want to leave no doubt that I am in top form.”

Ter Stegen’s determination and professionalism shine through, as he continues to strive for excellence and await his moment to lead Germany on the world stage.
