PREVIEW: 2023/24 Spanish La Liga – Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid

The Madrid Derby takes centre stage during match week six of La Liga. Real Madrid have started the season in perfect form – as seen by their 100% record in the Spanish topflight. Atletico Madrid have matched their cross-city rivals form in front of goal, albeit playing one game less.

Real Madrid have lost just one of their previous fourteen topflight fixtures against Atletico, winning six and drawing seven.

To Win (17/10) Atletico Madrid | Draw (49/20) | Real Madrid (31/20)

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid got out of the blocks well, netting ten goals across their opening three league fixtures, before they were dispatched 3-0 by Valencia. The international break seems to have derailed their progress in the Spanish topflight, but a run out in the Champions League may just be what the doctor ordered.

The man to watch in the Derby is Antoine Griezmann. The forward has opened his account for the season but will be eager to add to his tally against Real Madrid. Currently, he’s netted eight times across his thirty-eight fixtures against them, across all competitions. Strike partner Alvaro Morata is looking like a man bang in form. He has netted three times across his four league appearances this season and could get one over his former club!

 Real Madrid

Real Madrid have started the season in emphatic fashion. They currently occupy the summit of La Liga, with a certain Englishman pulling the strings. Their latest Galactico, Jude Bellingham, has hit the ground running. An impressive five goals in five league games means that he is the leading goal scorer so far.

A late goal keeping crisis saw Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga make league appearances in the Madrid nets, both chipping in with one clean sheet a piece. Upon closer inspection, Los Blancos conceded the first goal in games where they didn’t record shutouts. They will want to avoid that trend in this one …

Prediction: Real Madrid and BTTS (yes) at 4/1.

Whilst they may only be separated by a few kilometres geographically, Real Madrid’s supremacy has shown in recent history. After all, just a single league defeat across their previous fourteen fixtures would make even the most ardent of Atleti supporters feel like the underdogs, coming into this one. With Atleti’s impressive form at the business end of the pitch and Real’s calamities at the back, both teams to score looks to be on the cards.
