PREVIEW: 2023/24 Spanish La Liga – Game Week 13

Girona are top of the league – yes, you read that correctly. After being presented with the opportunity to make a statement, they have risen to the occasion and are showing no signs of slowing down.

11/20 Athletic Club | Draw 3/1 | Celta Vigo 48/10 (22:00)

San Mames stages the opening fixture of this game week, where Athletic Club are a force to be reckoned with. Across their opening 6 home league fixtures, they have found the back of the net 14 times – a feat only bettered by two topflight clubs (15, Girona and Real Sociedad). I expect the three points to go the way of the home side at 11/20.

37/20 Rayo Vallecano | Draw 5/2 | Girona 13/10 (15:00)

Rayo have kept 3 clean sheets in their previous 4 appearances (across all competitions), with their most recent one coming against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Despite that impressive defensive record, they have not been able to build on that, but do find themselves in the top half of La Liga. With Girona at the summit of the standings, I expect the away side to continue their streak at 13/10.

32/10 Almería | Draw 11/4 | Real Sociedad 15/20 (17:15)

Real Sociedad were desperately unlucky to have nothing to show for their spirited performance against FC Barcelona, last weekend. They are away to relegation-threatened Almeria – who are yet to taste a home league win. Back the away team to take all three points at 15/20.

9/10 Osasuna | Draw 23/10 | Las Palmas 32/10 (19:30)

Two second half goals against Atletico Madrid saw Las Palmas hold on for the 3 points, last time out. Indeed, that was their fourth win across their previous 5 league outings. That rich vein of form could be too strong for an Osasuna side who come into this one with back-to-back league losses. This one has the makings of a draw at 23/10.

15/10 Granada | Draw 21/10 | Getafe 37/20 (19:30)

Granada are sitting in second bottom of the league and have not won a game in nine attempts. The La Liga 2 champions have struggled since their return to the topflight and it could be a long season for them. After 5 straight draws in the Spanish topflight, Getafe went one further and picked up a win last time out. I expect the away side to make it two wins in two at 37/20.

7/20 Real Madrid | Draw 39/10 | Valencia 33/10 (22:00)

With two draws across their previous 3 league appearances, Real Madrid have relinquished their position at the top of the table. Indeed, their only win during that period was a 2-1 come from behind victory in the El Classico, courtesy of a Jude Bellingham brace. Back the home side to return to winning ways in this one at 7/20.

1/4 Barcelona | Draw 5/1 | Alaves 10/1 (17:15)

Barcelona is currently third in La Liga, some four points off log leaders Girona. Goals have been a scarce commodity for the Blaugrana, with their previous 4 league wins coming by a margin of just a single goal. Alaves snapped a 7-game winless run in La Liga last time out, but I don’t see them getting anything from this one. Back the home side to grab all 3 points here at 1/4.

21/20 Sevilla | Draw 49/20 | Real Betis 24/10 (19:30)

Since their defeat to Barca in September, Sevilla have gone on to draw their ensuing four league outings. Whilst interim manager Diego Alonso, has delivered strong performances, he will surely set his sights on a league win sooner rather than later. This weekend, he squares off with a Real Betis outfit who have avoided defeat across their previous 3 away league fixtures. Back a home win at 21/20.

9/20 Atletico Madrid | Draw 37/10 | Villarreal 54/10 (22:00)

Atletico Madrid will look to put their defeat against Las Palmas behind them as they look to close the gap at the top of the table. On home soil, Diego Simeone’s men have won each of their last 14 games in La Liga, equalling their best run of consecutive home wins in the history of the competition, achieved at the Vicente Calderón between May 2012 and February 2013. Back the home side to take all 3 points at 9/20.
