SuperSport United chairman Stan Matthews has confirmed the club’s interest in signing former Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo after his release from Orlando Pirates.

Hlatshwayo joined Pirates from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2020. ‘Tyson’ was a first-team regular to begin with but fell out of favour in the latter half of his maiden campaign with Pirates after a string of errors – including a glaring one in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

He subsequently fell down the pecking order at both club and international level. The 31-year-old made just 12 appearances for the Buccaneers in all competitions last season and was released by the Soweto giants a month ago.

The authoritative centre-back has been spotted training with SuperSport this week, where Gavin Hunt has been named head coach. It was at Wits where Hlatshwayo captained the side under Hunt with the pair enjoying great success together in terms of trophies. Hlatshwayo was named PSL Player of the Season in the 2016/17 title-winning campaign.

And now Hunt is keen to reunite the pair.

“I will speak to him (over the past weekend.) I am sure he will be interested (in signing Thulani Hlatshwayo.) He has worked with him before. It’s just a question of what other positions because we have space for four players and Gavin, will have to decide who those players are,” Matsatsantsa mogul Mathews told Kickoff.com.
