Pro Philani looks back at this weekend’s football action as Kaizer Chiefs crashed out of the Nedbank Cup, Sundowns off to a winning start in the CAFCL & Pirates outclass Algeria’s JS Saoura.
Aphumile AmaKhosi
In 2021, Kaizer Chiefs crashed out in the first round of the Nedbank Cup, losing to Glad Africa Championship outfit, Richards Bay FC.
In 2022, call it a déjà vu if you like, AmaKhosi were knocked out of the same competition by 2019 champions, Tim Sukazi Galaxy.
Remember, it was the same Galaxy that defeated Chiefs in the 2019 final at the Moses Mabhida stadium courtesy of Zakhele Lepasa’s 90th minute goal. In all fairness, Galaxy were all over Chiefs from the first minute.
Lindokuhle Mbatha, Bathusi Aubass & Ethan Brooks were in-charge in that midfield and controlled the pace of the game and the second balls until Augustine Kwem opened the scoring in the 54th minute.
Galaxy kept the shape and resisted Chiefs’ all-out attack until the last minute to give their coach his first ever cup victory in South Africa.
This defeat meant Chiefs have now gone seven years without a major trophy, an unwanted record which was never heard of in Chiefs’ history. It also left Chiefs fans lamenting on Twitter spaces, blaming everyone at the club from chairman Kaizer Sr. to his management team, to media officer, to coach, and the players were not spared.
Some Chiefs fans believe football has left the club and are now merchandise sellers instead of rebuilding the core sense of their existence, which is football. The question now on everyone’s lips is, should Baxter be kept as head coach or should the Motaungs give him more time to turn the season around?
But playing one MTN8 match, one Nedbank Cup match, and 30 league games with neither CAF Champions League nor CAF Confederations Cup in their fixtures list is not Kaizer Chiefs’ known standards.
TS Galaxy will be joined by seven DStv premiership teams, four GladAfrica Championship teams, four ABC Motsepe sides. The cup of dreams is certainly living up to its name.
Stuart Baxter failed to win any trophy this season.

He failed to build atleast a balance team that can play from all departments.
He failed to bring the best from his team.
His tectics are declining, i dont know why Kaizer Chiefs is keeping him. pic.twitter.com/uH2Noj5iyk
Bucs too good for Algeria’s JS Saoura
Mamelodi Sundowns kickstarted their CAFCL dream with a 1-0 victory against Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan in the North-West province. Themba Zwane profited from a poor back pass and scored the only goal of the match.
Hilal lifted their game in pursuit of the equaliser but were denied a goal for a questionable foul on Dennis Onyango. Sundowns’ next match will be an away trip vs Al-Merrick of Sudan in Cairo. The match will be played at a neutral venue due to political instability in Sudan.
Usuthu made their Champions League bow with a 1-0 defeat in Casablanca. AmaZulu will be proud of the way they fought and applied themselves away from home. Raja Casablanca’s last SA opponent at home was Orlando Pirates whom they hammered by 4-0.
Usuthu’s next match is against Horoya, a side that has never won in SA.
Orlando Pirates started on a positive footing vs JS Saoura of Algeria at the Orlando stadium, thanks to Happy Jele’s 2nd-minute strike and Bandile Shandu’s second-half tap-in. The talking point was the absence of Gabadinho Mhango in the Pirates team.
Mhango who had a good AFCON tournament with the Flames of Malawi scored 3 goals at the finals, his being snubbed left the Pirates faithful upset. But new man Kwame Peprah led the attack and silenced the Ncikazi Davids doubters by working hard, creating spaces for players like Shandu to get goals and make unsuspected entries to the boxes.

Congratulations to Vasco da Gama from Western Cape who were crowned 2021 SASOL League champions and together with City Lads from the Eastern Cape will be playing in the Hollywoodbets Super League in the upcoming season.
A shout out must also go out to Pitso Mosimane, for being only the second coach to win back-to-back medals at the FIFA Club World Cup.
I was amazed by Kante asking me if I could get Dieng to meet him. Humility at its best. God Bless Kante!😯 pic.twitter.com/J2WFSHeG0w
