In a letter to the PSL and as reported by SABC, Cape Town Spurs have called for harsh punishment to be imposed on Swallows for failing to honour fixtures against Masandawana and Golden Arrows.

Swallows were forced to call off their DSTV Premiership clash against the champions Mamelodi Sundowns, just hours before the two teams were due to meet on 27 December at Loftus Stadium.

This was due to an ongoing dispute with the players and it was also alleged that the SA Football Player’s Union claimed that the club had failed to pay December salaries early as promised.

According to NSL rules, any member club seeking to have a fixture cancelled must give at least 10 days’ notice, however, Swallows and the League only confirmed the news just hours before the match.

The letter from Cape Town Spurs states that the imposition of a fine and a forfeiture of a match is not enough punishment.

“The only reasonable deterrent is the imposition of more severe sanctions, such as the deduction of points, the expulsion of Swallows from the league, or their relegation to a lower division, of all sanctions that are within the Leagues disciplinary committee’s discretion to award, and which would be more appropriate in the circumstances. The imposition of a fine and a forfeiture of the match is simply not enough.” read the letter.

The penned letter by Cape Town Spurs has since touched many soccer fanatics, who then took to social media to dismiss Spurs, because they are at the bottom of the table, with one win from 16 matches, while others have supported the team, saying rules are rules.

Swallows will appear before the Premier Soccer League’s Disciplinary Committee on Thursday 11 January 2024.
