While Sundowns stormed to their fifth successive top-flight title, Amakhosi ended last term in fifth place as Bucs secured a sixth-placed finish.

Also ending above the Soweto giants was second-placed Cape Town City, third-placed Royal AM as well as Stellenbosch in fouth spot.

As he prepares his side for their opening league clash of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign against the Citizens on August 6, Mngqithi explained that their former league rivals still have a lot of catching up to do.

He said on KickOff: “They still have to fight Cape Town City, they still have to fight Stellenbosch, they still have to fight Royal AM.

“They are number five and number six for a reason, so they have got a lot of work to do to try and fight us.

“It’s [the Premiership season] going to be interesting.”

Chiefs play their first game of the season against Royal AM at Chatsworth Stadium as Pirates take on Swallows at Orlando Stadium.
