The 32-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the current season and having not started in games under coach Rulani Mokwena, Jali has rather been used off the bench instead which has led to speculation that the midfielder may be on the way out come season end.

In a recent interview with media, when asked about Jali’s future at Downs coach Mokwena said: “‘AJ’ very important player for us, important for the future of this football club, incredible leadership qualities, very important to have around.

“The mentality, his insight, I use him even as a third, fourth assistant coach to tell you the truth because he sits on the bench, he gives me a lot of information, what he sees, he’s got incredible experience.

“And apart from the human qualities, which is something we appreciate and love having within the club, that’s from a football perspective,” Mokwena said.

When asked about the contractual side of things, Mokwena said that he did not deal with such things as that was dealt with by the club management.

“The contractual and financial issues are handled in a different department at the football club and I’m sure that as soon as there is an update to be given, the club will issue that,” Mokwena added.

There have been media claims doing the rounds about Jali being linked with a move back to his former club Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs but the players agent Mike Makaab shot down those reports and said they were only speaking to Sundowns about renewing his client’s contract for now.
