PREVIEW: Wounded Chiefs aim to bounce back against SuperSport as CAFCL aspirations fade away

Two games remain as we edge closer to the end of another dramatic season. SuperSport and Chiefs – two familiar foes, lock horns with a lot riding on their last two fixtures if both teams have any hopes of securing third place and an opportunity to play in next season’s CAF.

SuperSport United’s chances of finishing just behind Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a massive blow after they dropped points in their previous fixtures and handed the advantage to Orlando Pirates to secure second spot and a place in CAF Champions League.

Coach Gavin Hunt will now have to find a way of ensuring his team wins the remaining matches to sustain their slim hopes of qualifying for the CAF Champions League but will need Pirates to drop points in their remaining fixtures. If his wish is not granted, a third-place finish will be enough for Matsatsantsa to play in the CAF Confederation Cup competition.

Matsatsantsa will be looking for a strong finish to the season and the Glamour boys will be next on the list of casualties for the Pretoria-based side. There has been a good level of consistency throughout the season for SuperSport United but will need to show guts and character to go out and play to their strengths and express themselves to get maximum points from these remaining two fixtures.

Hunt will want to get one back on Chiefs as they came out short in the reverse fixture going down 2-1. Matsatsantsa must play on the front foot and take early control of the game as Chiefs looks to be a wounded animal after they were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The reward of securing third place will be massive for Hunt as they missed out on the chance of lifting silverware this season.

To Win Match
SuperSport United 14/10 | Draw 2/1 | Kaizer Chiefs 2/1

After a season of ups and downs, Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup in a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Orlando Pirates. There will be no trophies for Chiefs once again, but there are at least two more matches for them to achieve some sought of reward by snatching third spot and a chance to play in the CAF Confederation Cup competition.

Chiefs legend Arthur Zwane took over as the club’s coach at the beginning of the 2022-2023 season and his team has been promising but, in the end, they failed to deliver much in terms of important results in key matches. This match will be a chance for Amakhosi to pick up the pieces and get a win away from home which would give them a better chance to snatch third spot.

Both matches won’t be easy for Chiefs because SuperSport are also pushing to finish second or third on the log while Cape Town City want to consolidate their place in the top eight and have a chance to finish fourth or third. Zwane will welcome third spot with open arms as it will boost his player’s experience and development of his squad.

There has been a lot of questions about Zwane being the head coach of Kaizer Chiefs and whether he is the right man for the job. Although he failed to deliver any silverware in his first season, there are a lot of positives that he can take from this season and improve on and learn from this experience.

Verdict: SuperSport United Win (14/10)

Both teams will be looking to finish the season off on a high but I’m backing SuperSport to come away with maximum points.
