Pro Philani looks back at the past weekend’s local football as Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated in the CAFCL, Pirates march on to the semis of the CAFCC and more!
Sundowns choke!
Mamelodi Sundowns crashed out of the CAF Champions League for the third successive year in the quarter-finals as they were eliminated by Petro Atletico of Angola at the FNB Stadium.
Downs were facing an uphill battle in attempting to overturn the 2-1 defeat they suffered in Angola. It was a nervy start in the first half as striker Peter Shalulile missed inside the box in the 8th minute before Zwane missed a penalty before half-time. In the second half, defender Brian Onyango found the opener which potentially could have given Sundowns the upper hand before Azulao found an equalizer from the penalty spot.
A valiant performance in front of the Yellow Nation ends in defeat!

Bucs sail through!
An intense shootout was required by Orlando Pirates to progress to the semi-finals of the CAF Confed Cup. Pirates came into this match needing a goal to square the tie after they suffered a 1-0 loss in Tanzania.
Ghanaian youngster, Kwame Perprah, scored in the second half to bring the match even. Richard Ofori was the hero on the day with a penalty save and also scoring the winning penalty.

Stellenbosch beat kaizer Chiefs again!
Deano van Rooyen’s solitary strike was enough to earn Stellenbosch their first win at home against AmaKhosi and completed a double over the Soweto giants. This loss of Amakhosi could potentially hurt their CAFCL participation challenge. AmaKhosi are chasing Royal AM who are occupying the second spot on the log.
Tjooooh!

Swallows fly out of danger
A late Musa Nyatama strike helped Swallows overturn a 2-0 deficit to defeat fellow strugglers, Baroka, 3-2 at the Dobsonville Stadium. Baroka are currently cut adrift at the bottom of the DStv Premiership log. Swallows moved to 14th spot and above TS Galaxy via goal difference.

KZN derby lacked goals
Sparks were flying at the Chatsworth stadium when the KZN rivalry took centre stage on Sunday afternoon as Royal AM faced AmaZulu. Newcomers Royal AM, who are second on the log, were looking for a chance to close the big points gap at the top of the log and keep their CAFCL hopes alive.
It was the home side that had more chances in the game but a combination of questionable officiating and poor execution proved to be the difference on the day. AmaZulu remained seventh on the log as their quest to finish in the top 8 remains in the balance.

Glad Africa Championship
Richards Bay are three games away from achieving their dream of making it to the elite league after securing a 2-1 home win at the King Zwelithini stadium against Hungry Lions on Saturday afternoon. The Natal Rich Boyz moved two points clear of AmaTuks at the top who were held by third-placed JDR to a 1-1 draw on Friday.
