Pro Philani looks back at the past weekend’s local football as Swallows lost to Cape Town All Stars to set-up a do-or-die finale, Sundowns released George Maluleka and more!
Swallows lose to set-up a do or die finale
Cape Town All Stars threw the cat amongst the pigeons in the Relegation/Promotion Play-offs when they defeated Swallows FC 2-1 in Parow. Swallows’ defeat came in comical circumstances when experienced defender Wandisile Letlabika’s moment of madness gave an already eliminated All Stars the three points.
Swallows will have to battle it out on Wednesday against Tuks in a winner takes all kind of match. Though a draw will be enough for Tuks, it is the experience of the Swallows squad that the University-owned club should fear on the day.
Swallows captain, Lebohang Mokoena, lambasted the sides’ game management on the day and deeming it “poor’ in front of the TV cameras. Up until the 88th minute, Swallows were leading 1-0 and looked a safe bet to secure the points. They’re now under massive pressure.

Brave Bafana lose in Morocco
Bafana Bafana lost their first qualifier 2-1 to Morocco in Rabat in what many termed as the best performance by a Bafana team under Hugo Broos.
Lyle Foster struck first in the seventh minute from Portuguese-based midfielder, Siphephelo Sithole’s, assist. The Bafana mentor was brave to start the match following a principle of familiarity. Sundowns’ trio of Khuliso Mudau, Lyle Lakay and Grant Kekana started at the back, the midfield duo from Belenenses SD in Portugal of Sithole and Thibang Phete starred in midfield, while captain Percy Tau, fresh from CAFCL final disappointment led the attack with Thembinkosi Lorch and Lyle Foster.
Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the star for the team apart from Sithole and Foster.
Williams showed his experience and leadership quality when he kept Bafana in the game for long periods with a number of stunning saves. It was the influence of PSG man Hakimi on the right which kept the Bafana defence, especially the left-hand side, busy.
Foster silenced the home crowd in the seventh minute of the game, but the Moroccans fought back to equalize in the 2nd half and eventually snatched the winner in the 87th minute of the game.
All Bafana need now is to beat Liberia to save their qualification as they are in a three-team group.
Morocco get their #AFCON2023Q campaign off to a winning start. They come from behind to take all three points against South Africa.
