SuperSport finally win the Tshwane derby

The young Spartans stunned the defending champions 2-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night. The victory was made all the sweeter for Gavin Hunt’s side after they were beaten 2-0 six days ago at the Tuks Stadium in the MTN8.

19-year-old Thapelo Maseko opened the scoring for SuperSport following great work by Talent Mbatha who won the ball inside SuperSport’s half and drove through Sundowns’ midfield where he found Iqraam Rayners unmarked on the right flank to set up Maseko for a tap in.

The Brazilians had better chances in the first half but failed to capitalize with Ethiopian, Abubeker Nassir and Peter Shalulile, the two most wasteful culprits.

Rayners profited again from another defensive error this time on the left flank to set up unmarked Bradley Grobler inside the box who made no mistake from  few yards out to make it 2-0.

Gavin Hunt was the happiest coach on the night following an exchange of words between himself and Sundowns’ co-coach, Manqoba Mngqithi.

SuperSport moved to 11th on the log with just eight points after six games while Sundowns dropped to fourth.

Cape Town City are back!

TS Galaxy were beaten 1-0 at home by Cape Town City thanks to Khanyisa Mayo’s tap-in.

It was end-to-end stuff with both sides playing with great pace and energy. City will cry foul after some poor officiating saw Mayo’s second goal chalked off after the ball had clearly crossed the line.

The officials continue to take the spotlight in the DStv Premiership every week with poor decisions. Perhaps this is something that VAR – even in a limited capacity – could assist with?

Who is coaching Marumo Gallants?

In what was a dramatic turn of events at the Marumo Gallants camp, head coach Romain Folz was missing on the bench before their encounter against Swallows FC.

Media reports suggested that the French-Moroccan coach resigned at team breakfast in camp after he alleged some members of the club’s management suggested a lineup for him.

Gallants didn’t show any sign of a side in trouble on the field as they played to a 1-all draw against a Swallows side that had just welcomed back coach Dylan Kerr back on the bench after he received his work permit.

Prior to that, midfielder Musa Nyatama was in charge of the side with the help of another player Thela Thela who is doubling up as the goalkeeper coach. Nyatama will now return to his playing role now that the coach has received his papers.

A weekend to remember in KZN

KZN sides had a weekend to remember following a strong of positive results in the DStv Premiership.

First, it was Richards Bay who were playing outside of KZN for the first time since their promotion, when the Natal Rich Boyz visited Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

New signing Sanele Barns scored the opener for the visitors in the first half before Nsikelelo Nyauza netted the winner towards the end of the match.

This was Richards Bay’s third win of the season following two successive defeats in previous rounds. This 2-1 victory moves The Natal Rich Boyz to fifth on the log, tied on points with Sundowns but only behind on goal difference.

Royal AM top the DStv Prem

Royal AM got themselves an away win in Limpopo when they defeated 10-man Sekhukhune United 2-1 to go top of the standings.

The sensational Mfundo Thikazi scored a brace for AM and ensured his side returns to KZN with a full complement of points to consolidate their position atop the standings.

This was AM’s first victory in Limpopo in the DStv Premiership. They failed to win a match against Limpopo sides on the road.

Golden Arrows defeat Chippa United

Arrows defeated Chippa United 3-2 at the Princess Magogo Stadium, KwaMashu.

Prior to this match, Arrows were second from the bottom and have now moved to 10th with just eight points.

Nsikelelo Nxadi, Nduduzo Sibiya and Pule Mmodi were on the score sheet for Abafana Besithende. The win will ease the pressure on co-coaches, Mabhuti Khanyeza and Vusumuzi Vilakazi, who are also in their first full season in the top ranks of South African football.

Usuthu held by Kaizer Chiefs

AmaZulu were held to a goalless draw by Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. Usuthu didn’t create enough chances to secure all three points but will feel that a point away at Chiefs is a good result.

In the first half, the Durban side survived a scare when Chiefs defender Dillan Solomons missed a penalty. The visitors brought in Lehlohonolo Majoro in the second half to inject a bit of energy up front but he couldn’t find any opportunities to give his side the goal they desperately so needed.

The draw moved AmaZulu second on the log, two points behind leaders, Royal AM, with a game in hand.

Maritzburg United beats Orlando Pirates

In the last fixture of the weekend, Maritzburg United defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 thanks to Amadou Soukouna’s 80th-minute penalty at the packed Harry Gwala stadium.

Maritzburg’s defence was solid throughout the match as it kept star-studded Pirates at bay for 88 minutes without a shot at goal on target.

John Maduka couldn’t be prouder as this was Maritzburg United’s first league win against Pirates in years.

Midfielder Siboniso Conco was adjudged to have been fouled by defender Oliseh Ndah inside the box with replays suggesting the penalty should never have been given.

The referee’s call to award a penalty sparked more VAR debate on social media. The win took Maritzburg United to seventh on the log standings with just nine points, four points behind current log leaders.
