Richards Bay coach Kaitano Tembo says SuperSport United are well placed to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the DStv Premiership title next season.

Tembo coached Matsatsantsa for a number of years but didn’t come close to the achievements of the club under Gavin Hunt last season as they ended in third place on the league standings.

Now as the 2023/24 season is on the verge of kicking off, Tembo explained that his former team, who have spent a lot of money investing in the team, have a great opportunity for top spot this time around.

Ahead of the upcoming campaign, SuperSport have signed Ronaldo Pfumbidzai (Chippa United), Phathutshedzo Nange (Kaizer Chiefs), Siphesihle Ndlovu (Orlando Pirates), Grant Margeman (Mamelodi Sundowns), Washington Arubi (Marumo Gallants), Abdurazak Hamza (Namungo FC), Etiosa Ighodaro (Mamelodi Sundowns), Terrence Dzvukamanja (Orlando Pirates) and Siyanda Xulu (Free agent).

Tembo said on IOL: “Every game you play is difficult. It’s not easy to get three points, so SuperSport are not different. They spent a lot of money in the past two seasons.”

“They should be winning the league. I don’t think there should be any excuse. SuperSport should be competing with teams like Mamelodi Sundowns now.”

Richards Bay kick off their new season against SuperSport on Saturday August 5. On his own team’s chances, the head coach added: “But at the same time for us, we have to prepare ourselves properly so we can go out there and get positive results.

“My concern is creating chances and scoring as well as defending long balls because we are playing against a team that relies heavily on crosses and set play.

“We are still lacking, especially upfront. We need better quality as well as one strong midfielder. Someone who has the qualities that will communicate because we don’t have a leader.”
