Desh Parthab highlights some stats you should keep in mind before taking your midweek DStv Premiership bets. This week he highlights Chiefs’ home woes, Swallows taking flight under Kerr and more!
The long weekend brought some football treats for us to enjoy, unless you’re a fan of one of the two Soweto giants! There was a mouthwatering encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City which saw the Citizens come away from the FNB Stadium with all three points.
Indeed, CTC shot-stopper Hugo Marqueez has been in phenomenal form for his club – he conceded his first away league goal of 2022 in that one!
Orlando Pirates had nothing to show from their encounter with TS Galaxy who picked up their first home league win since the turn of the year.
The Nedbank Cup final was decided upon as Mamelodi Sundowns and Gallants came up with the goods and will battle it out later this month.
With that being said, here are a few players who could look to finish the season off in style.
Put some respect on the King’s name
King Ndlovu has kept four clean sheets across his previous five home league appearances of 2022. Gallants have conceded just a single league goal on home soil since the turn of the year. Similarly, he kept back to back clean sheets in the Nedbank Cup as his side navigated the quarter final and semi-final stages to set up the final against Mamelodi Sundowns. Gallants have drawn eight of their 13 home league appearances, only Amazulu (9) have drawn more on home soil, and they’ve only lost two of those home outings.

Stellies love a roadtrip
Stellenbosch have taken 18 points from their 13 away league outings (W4 D6 L3), only Mamelodi Sundowns (22) and Kaizer Chiefs (22) have accumulated more on their travels from all top-flight clubs. Antonio van Wyk – who recently went to Belgium for trials – has returned 2 assists across his previous 3 appearances for his club and is expected to be in the thick of things this time around. Stellenbosch take on a SuperSport team who have kept just a single clean sheet across their previous 9 home league outings.

Birds in full flight under Kerr
Since Dylan Kerr has assumed the reins of Swallows, the club has taken just 15 points (W3 D6 L5) from their 14 league outings – only three top-flight clubs have taken fewer. Despite this, the goals have been coming in thick and fast. Indeed only Sundowns (18), Cape Town City (14), Orlando Pirates (10) have scored more home league goals than Swallows have (9), since Kerr’s appointment. Mwape Musonda has bagged three goals in his previous four league appearances for Swallows and has been instrumental in Kerr’s revival project.
Mwape Musonda’s goal lifts Swallows FC out of the relegation zone in the #DStvPrem. The Birds have picked up seven points from a possible nine in their last three matches.

Another season, Another title for Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns clinched a record-extending fifth consecutive PSL trophy, bringing their overall tally to 12 since the PSL’s inception. Furthermore, the Tshwane giants have set up a Nedbank Cup final against Gallants and could add to their trophy haul for the season. Pavol Safranko has had a somewhat underwhelming season, netting just 5 league goals this season. Despite this, the forward has bagged two goals across his previous four appearances for Sundowns (across all competitions) and could get a run out as Masadawana look to rest some of their dangermen.

A season to forget for AmaKhosi
Only Swallows (6) have seen more home league defeats than Kaizer Chiefs (5) have this term. Since Baxter was removed from his duties, interim boss Arthur Zwane has overseen three straight defeats from his three league outings. Khama Billiat could potentially cool down the Chiefs hotseat. The star striker has bagged one goal and two assists across his previous five league outings for the Glamour Boys and comes up against a Gallants team which could be distracted by their Nedbank Cup final date.
