Saturday’s fixtures provided upsets galore. Baroka picked up their first league win of 2022 and kept a clean sheet in their bout with fellow relegation strugglers TS Galaxy. The Glamour Boys came out on top in the Soweto Derby, which earned them their 5th away league victory (joint most with Sundowns). The result of the day went to Maritzburg United who dispatched Sundowns 2-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium, which coincidentally was the first time this season that Masandawana conceded 2 on the road. With 6 clubs in action in the weekend’s remaining fixtures, here’s some performers that could tower above the rest.

Gallants aim for hat-trick

Following just 12 goals in their opening 18 league fixtures, Marumo Gallants have registered 3 goals in back-to-back league fixtures, taking maximum points along the way. Their 2 goals scored in the Nedbank Cup sent them through to the last 16 – meaning they have 3 straight wins across all competitions since the turn of the year. Katlego Otladisa has bagged 3 assists across his 3 outings this year and will be looking to add to his tally as Gallants continue their ascent up the PSL log.

Golden Arrows’ solid defence

Despite occupying a spot in the bottom half of the log, Golden Arrows (24) have only been outscored by Royal AM (27) and Mamelodi Sundowns (40). Nkosinathi Sibisi is currently the clubs 3rd highest league goalscorer – but is yet to score from open play. The defender is something of a penalty specialist, having converted half of the KZN sides’ 6 awarded penalties during this campaign, with his teammates successfully converting the other 3. Their 6 converted penalties is the most from all top-flight clubs.

Chippa United continue to search for their first win

Chippa are still looking for their first win of 2022 across all competitions. The club has conceded 2 or more goals in each of their 4 outings since the turn of the year. Eva Nga has bagged 4 goals in his previous 3 away league fixtures and takes on a Golden Arrows side that haven’t a clean sheet in their previous 3 home league fixtures. He will have added motivation since Baroka beat TS Galaxy, which means that the bottom 3 clubs are deadlocked on 17 points each prior to Chippa’s bout.

Stellenbosch’s impressive away run

Stellenbosch have lost 1 of their 10 away league fixtures this campaign – the fewest from all topflight clubs. The Cape Town side are winless since the turn of the year and its down to their inability to see the game too fruition. They have conceded a goal in each of their 3 fixtures this year all coming in the final 20 minutes of football. This nasty habit has seen them knocked out of the Nedbank Cup and cost them 4 points from winning positions in their 2 league fixtures this year.

Thwihli Thwahla

Royal AM have a knack of leaving it late. Their 5 league goals scored after the 90th minute is the most from all top-flight clubs. The league newcomers put 2 past Supersport without reply last time out, which brought their goal tally to 27 for the season, only Mamelodi Sundowns (36) have outscored them.
