Despite facing formidable competition and limited playing time, Mashego remains resolute, expressing no regrets in his decision.

Mashego, a former Cape Town City player, acknowledged the intensified competition at Sundowns, with only eight appearances across various competitions since his transfer in September 2022. His dedication to the team, however, cost him his spot in the Bafana Bafana, adding an extra layer of motivation as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches. Undeterred, he maintains hope of securing a spot in the final squad.

Speaking to the media after the Tshwane Derby press conference, Mashego shared insights into his mindset: “There are no regrets, honestly speaking. I want to retire with titles. I want to have something to look back on and say, ‘I have achieved this and that,’ that’s why I joined Sundowns, so there are no regrets.”

He candidly admitted to the challenging competition, especially for the coveted left-back position, where he contends with Abdelmounaim Boutouil and Aubrey Modiba. Mashego’s perspective reflects a mature understanding of the dynamics within the team: “To be fair, the team has been doing well. AB (Abdelmounaim) has been consistent and Aubrey Modiba has also been consistent. I just have to be honest with myself to observe and be patient and not put too much pressure [on myself] because I just came back now (from a groin injury).”

His return to full action during Sundowns’ 3-0 victory against Nouadhibou in the CAF Champions League group stage opener showcased his determination. Mashego recognizes the distinct qualities each player brings to the left-back role, emphasizing the tactical diversity that the technical team seeks to leverage: “Aubrey and AB are completely different players. That’s why they [the technical team] have three of us.”

Mashego’s tactical versatility is evident in his analysis: “There are some games that require, let’s say AB because he is more of a reserved left-back, and there are some games where they need Aubrey to invert because he is more of a midfielder. There are some games where they need a bit of speed and aggression … and that’s where I come in.”

As Sundowns gear up for the Tshwane Derby against SuperSport United on Wednesday, Mashego aims to secure a spot in the starting line-up. His journey exemplifies a player’s commitment to growth and success, navigating challenges with patience and resilience.
