There were incredible scenes unfolded at Loftus Versveld on Sunday as Mamelodi Sundowns claimed the inaugural African Football League.

In scenes reminiscent of the Bulls’ Super Rugby heyday between 2007 and 2010, Loftus Versveld was packed to the rafters as Mamelodi Sundowns successfully overturned a 2-1 deficit to lift the inaugural African Football League on Sunday afternoon against Moroccan giants, Wydad Casablanca.

Masandawna dominated the tie from the off no doubt trying to banish the ghosts of the defeat they suffered at the hands of Wydad at the Loftus back in March.

Rulani Mokwena’s charges did well to keep their heads with Wydad players consistently going down under innocuous-looking challenges. A late first-half strike from Peter Shalulile levelled the tie before Aubrey Modiba capitalised on a sloppy back pass to slot cooly past Mehi Maftah in what proved to be the decisive moment.

Check out some of the celebrations immediately after the final whistle. Spine-tingling stuff in Pretoria.
