The plaudits have been pouring in for Bafana Bafana following their African Cup of Nations exploits on Tuesday that saw them knock tournament favourites Morocco out of the event in the round of sixteen.

The unfancied South Africans, who went into the tournament simply hoping to get out of the pool stages outplayed the Atlas Lions to win 2-0, in a display that has been praised by both Rugby World Cup winning coach Jacques Nienaber and football icon Pitso Mosimane.

Writing on Twitter after the game Mosimane had special praise for Teboho Mokoena, the scorer of the second goal. He wrote: “Teboho Mokoena! What a player. The free kick he scored, was just the icing on the cake! He stepped on every grass leaf on the pitch.

“Bossing the midfield. No arguments, SA is one of the most tactically disciplined team in the tournament.

“No frills, just grinding. Credit to Hugo Broos and Helman Mkhalele. Their team works very hard and tactically disciplined. One step at a time, we still have a road to travel, feet on the ground but we can celebrate this hard-earned victory.”

Mosimane’s words were echoed by Nienaber who watched the game from Ireland where he now coaches. “Well done Bafana Bafana. Supporting you from the UK. It might not be a 100-inch TV but worth every second of viewing,” he said.

Bafana Bafana will next face Cape Verde in the quarter-finals on Saturday. The game will kick off at 22:00.
