Bafana Bafana returned home to a hero’s welcome after touching down at the OR Tambo International Airport after their impressive bronze medal finish at the 2023 AFCON.

The Bafana Bafana squad returned to a hero’s welcome after touching down at the OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday.

Captain Ronwen Williams and his team were greeted by jubilant fans after their most impressive showing at the continental showpiece since 2000.

Williams addressed the crowd by thanking all South Africans for their support throughout the tournament.

“I’m extremely proud, we’re just happy that we can inspire and unite our country,”  Williams said.

“To see this is amazing, and the small opportunity we get as footballers to unite our country, we took that.

“We’re happy and we’re proud.

“Thanks for the support, we saw each and every message and even though you guys were far away we felt the love.

“Let’s keep it like this, let’s keep going and let’s keep growing from strength to strength.”

Their heroics at this year’s AFCON tournament hosted in Ivory Coast was Bafana’s best showing in 24 years since the team including the likes of legendary players such as Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish, Shaun Bartlett and John Moshoeu.

For the sensational Williams, it proved a historic tournament after being named as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

The 32-year-old became the first goalkeeper to save an astonishing four penalty kicks in an AFCON tournament. Before going on to save two more crucial penalties to secure a third-place finish for his side against DR Congo.
