On Friday Kaizer chiefs boss Cavin Johnson was telling the media how his biggest focus for the remainder of the season was winning the Nedbank Cup – just a couple of days later he was eating humble pie and apologising for a shock defeat at the hands of the almost unheard of Milford FC.

Stuttering Chiefs, perhaps weighed down by the expectations of their 16 million fans were dumped out of the Cup at the first hurdle as they lost 5-4 on penalties. The result means they will, in all likelihood end the season without a trophy, meaning eight seasons since they last won anything.

Speaking to the media after the game Johnson said: “You have to apologise to the 16 million supporters that we have.

“I am sure they will be able to see or they have seen the game on television.

“It’s not that we allowed Milford to come at us, I mean they never had a shot at goal I think.

“We tried the best we could in order to get as far as we could in this particular tournament and with the trophy drought as it is at the moment, the only thing we can do is to repay back the people by playing properly in the league,” he said.

The average South African football fan has probably never heard of Milford – so to put the scale of the defeat into context Chiefs’ vanquishers are currently struggling in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where they have won only five times in 19 games this season.

Chiefs will have a chance to restore a degree of respectability to their season when they play again on Saturday against troubled Moroka Swallows.
