Her journey, which began at the age of six, took her to the international stage by the time she was just 11. Today, she stands as a beacon of determination and resilience, a role model for aspiring athletes everywhere.

As one of South Africa’s flag bearers at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, Rooskrantz carried the hopes of the nation with pride. However, her Olympic dreams took a heartbreaking turn when she injured her foot during the floor exercise. Despite this setback, her spirit remains unbroken.

“Although my time in the competition was cut short due to an injury in my foot, I’m filled with so much gratitude and pride. As disappointed as I am, this journey was never just about me or one moment – it was about inspiring a nation and paving the way for future generations,” Rooskrantz told Woman and Home Magazine.

Rooskrantz’s career has been marked by remarkable highs and difficult challenges. Between 2015 and 2017, she dislocated her knee five times, and in 2019, she suffered a serious foot injury. Yet, these injuries never discouraged her.

She made history at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming one of the first gymnasts of colour to represent South Africa, alongside Naveen Daries.

The road to Paris was full of challenges, but she never lost determination and strength. She made history by becoming the first South African gymnast to qualify for the Olympics in 2020 without relying on a continental quota.

Her willpower saw her achieve numerous accolades, including a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and multiple gold medals at the World Cup.

Rooskrantz’s accomplishments extend beyond her Olympic appearances. Throughout her career as a gymnast, she has a few accolades such as a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and a couple gold medals at the World Cup.

  • She has qualified for many world championship games and was ranked No 1 woman on the uneven bars in Cairo 2022, with a score of 12.300.
  • She won the flag-bearer award for the Olympic Games opening ceremony this year.
  • She won the ministerial award in 2022 at the Momentum Gsport Awards.
  • She was the University of Johannesburg’s 2022 age group sportswoman and age group student-athlete of the year.
  • She won a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Despite the heartbreak of not being able to compete for a medal in Paris after all her hard work, Rooskrantz’s story is far from over.

Her grit and grace in the face of adversity have already inspired many, and there’s no doubt that she will return stronger, ready to fight for her place on the podium in four years to come.

Happy Women’s Day Mbokodo! ❤️
