A much-changed Hollywoodbets Sharks XV ran in 11-tries to put Griffons to the sword in a 75-17 mauling at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday that ensures they finish third on the log this season.
Makazole Mapimpi scored four tries while fellow winger Eduan Keyter bagged three as John Plumtree’s side overcame any lingering doubts surrounding potential team disruptions to lock in a playoff spot.
The round nine result secures the Durbanites third place following the Golden Lions’ 57-33 win over the Blue Bulls at Loftus and the Free State Cheetahs’ 31-44 defeat to Griquas in Kimberley on Friday. With the upcoming final round seeing the Bulls (37 log points) travel to the east coast to tackle the Sharks (31) and the Lions (38) facing the Griffons in Joburg, it’s unlikely there will be any more changes to the top three.
Post-match, Sharks attack coach David Williams said that he was proud of the performance his revamped team produced on Saturday while acknowledging the efforts of the visitors.
“A lot of guys [were] coming out of the pre-season, trying to maintain the momentum of the Currie Cup squad. This is six games unbeaten now, so a great performance from the guys.
“Conditions were tough and credit to the Griffons; every time they just keep coming back. We’ve got some sore bodies, so credit to those guys for what they delivered as the opposition.
“For a first hit out, it’s a collective effort from the guys. Obviously, someone gets the ball across the line but there were some great collective moments as a group.”
Williams went on to single out skipper Nick Hatton’s influence on the team while eagerly anticipating what’s still to come.
“Next week we know Sunday it’s the Bulls here at Kings Park so a real challenge. We’re looking forward to that.
“Special mention to Nick Hatton, what he’s done for the group and how he’s led this group this week with the change of coaches.”
