NEWS: Newly elected Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane bags two awards

Hard work has paid off for newly elected Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane, as she bagged two awards at the 2024 Free State Sports Awards.

Hard work has paid off for newly elected Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane, as she bagged two awards at the 2024 Free State Sports Awards.

The event was held on Saturday evening at Bloemfontein City Hall.

Chawane, elected Spar Proteas skipper last month, received the MEC’s Excellence Award and People’s Choice Sports Star of the Year.

Affectionately known as KC, Chawane plays different positions including centre and wing attack, took over the captaincy Msomi who had led the team since 2016. Msomi retired as the most-capped player in the history of the team.

Chawane was not the only one who represented Netball South Africa at the awards.

Karla Pretorius, who was also recently appointed as an assistant captain won Sportswoman of the Year, while netball coach Burta de Kock received MEC’s Lifetime Achiever Award.

Free State Crinums were awarded for winning the 2024  Telkom Netball League.

Fans have since congratulated the netball stars on social media.

Shadi Dames said: “Wow! What a day for netball. Congratulations Khayisa, Karla, Burta and Crinums!”

Suanita Cilliers Botha said: “Well done Karla Burtha KC. You do us so proud.”
