eLan Gold Cup 2018
Journalist: Richard McMillan (Gold Circle)
Massive betting pools, second only to those on Vodacom Durban July Day, are in store for the millions of punters throughout South Africa that will have a wager or two on the 12-race Super Saturday programme that brings South Africa’s Champions Season to a close at Greyville in Durban.
With the traditional entertainment and excitement that has always accompanied this special occasion and made “Gold Cup Day” one of Africa’s premier racing and social gatherings, betting pools throughout the day will be well above average resulting in the potential for lucrative payouts.
Major interest will again be on the expected mega Pick 6 pool of R7-million which will be boosted by a carryover injection of R1.5-million and the R3.5-million Quartet pool on the day’s main feature event, the R1.25-million, eLan Gold Cup, that will kick off with a R300 000 carryover starter.
With 10 feature races headed by the country’s most prestigious marathon event over 3 200m, Saturday’s Festival of Racing also includes four Grade 1 events that will play defining roles in the racing Industry’s annual Equus Awards that take place in August.
While the general racing public and the occasional punters that come out for the country’s special meetings like that to be enjoyed on Saturday, for the racing purists it will be all about the magnificent equine stars, the potential winners in the various Equus “champion” categories, and likely champions of the future to be followed when the new racing season in the country opens at the beginning of August.
Saturday’s programme will point the way but even more importantly, there is the unfinished business of Champions Season to look forward to. In addition to the eLan Gold Cup, there are results to come for the R1-million, Grade 1 World Sports Betting Champions Cup over 1 800m, the R1-million, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1 200m and the two 1 600m challenges for the country’s top two-year-olds, the Premiers Champion Stakes and the Thekwini Stakes that each carry a stake of R750 000.
Together with five other feature races on the day, Super Saturday is truly a Festival of Racing and a celebration of the thoroughbred that should not be missed.
