International Racing: Saturday 16 May 2020 – Ascot

International Racing: Friday 15 May 2020 – Scone

An exciting nine-race programme is on the cards at Ascot on Saturday. The meeting includes a weight for age Group 3 event which is run over six furlongs. The best bet on the day is AMELIA’S CONTRAIRE who takes her place in Race 2. She was ultra-impressive when winning her last start over this course and distance. William Pike retains the ride this afternoon and the pair should be hard to beat.

Race 2
Three 3yr old fillies could dominate the finish here and complete the trifecta. The top pick goes to MOTHER’S DAY who has consistent formlines to her credit and was only narrowly beaten last time out over 1100M. She steps up in trip, but from her handy draw of four, she looks to be the one to side with today. RIDERS INTHE STAND has shown gradual improvement in her last three outings and finished a close up third last time out over this distance. SHE’S UNUSUAL was only caught very late when finishing just 0.2L behind the winner last time out and may prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages here. DANZA IN THE DARK has only had the two runs, but takes a step up in distance today and may do better as a result.

Race 1
SASSY TRADER caught the eye when winning on debut on this
course. She was quite keen in the early stages of that race, but the manner in
which she drew off in the final 100m was encouraging. The daughter of Trade
Fair would have come on with the run under her belt and she should could be
anything. Patrick Carbery retains the ride this afternoon and the pair should
find themselves in the winner’s enclosure once again. KISSONALLFORCHEEKS notched up her first victory in fine style
over this course and distance last time. She does take on stronger opposition
this afternoon, but the manner in which she won suggests there is more to come
from the daughter of Written Tycoon. Chris Parnham remains in the saddle today
and the pair should be the ones to throw out the biggest challenge to the top
selection.
Race 2
AMELIA’S CONTRAIRE caught the eye when winning over this course
and distance last time. She was settled at the rear of the field under a slow
tempo and ran on strongly to win with ease in the run down to the wire. It must
be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She has won twice and
finished second once from four starts on this course. William Pike has a good
33%-win strike rate for this trainer and the pair should take a power of
beating. WE’VE GOT DREAMS returns from a much needed 19-week break. She
has won twice and finished third once from five attempts over this distance.
Fitness should not be a concern today as she has had two barriers trials
leading into this race, the latest of which she won. Kyra Yuill has been aboard
for all three of her wins and the pair should complete the exacta.
Race 3
JAGUAR GREY won her maiden well in her last start over
this course and distance. She set the early pace that day, regained the lead at
the 200m mark and kept going for an easy victory. She does take on stronger
today, but she is lightly raced and looks progressive. Shaun O’Donnell knows
her well having won once and finished second twice from as many starts. She
does jump from a mid-field barrier position and should be the one they have to
beat. SNIPPY MISS has finished runner-up in her last three
starts. The daughter of Snippetson has finished second twice from three
attempts over this course and distance. Clint Johnston-Porter knows her well
and the pair should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.
Race 4
MOOD SWINGS was an impressive winner on debut over this
distance at Bunbury. He raced from a handy position that day and drew clear
well in the final 200m. The son of War Chant would have come on from the run
under his belt and with the natural progression that is expected, he should
keep his unbeaten record intact. He jumps from a handy barrier position which
should help his cause. MISS FROST
is a filly taking on the males. She
didn’t have much luck when finishing fourth last time as she received a heavy
bump at the start and never got into the race. She has won once and finished
second once from as many outings over this course and distance. It is
encouraging that William Pike retains the ride and with a bit of luck in
running, she may be the one to pick up the pieces should the top choice fluff
his lines.
Race 5
KIA ORA STAR is the value bet on today’s programme. He
showed good signs of returning to best form in his last start over a mile on
this course. He was keen in the early stages of that race, moved up well, but
was outrun in the shadow of the post. It is a big plus that Kyra Yuill has
opted to ride the son of Blackfriars once again. He is having his peak run this
afternoon and should be cherry-ripe coming into this race. PORPHYRIO was an easy three length winner of her last start over the mile at
Pinjarra Park last time. The daughter of War Chant is having a good season with
a record of two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes from ten
outings. Jarred Noske does duty for the first time and the pair should be the
ones to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.
Race 6
RIVER BEAU is one of the better bets on this
afternoon’s card. The son of Snippetson has won his last two starts over this
course and distance. He is having a good season thus far with a record of three
wins, three seconds and a third-place finish from nine starts. Jason Whiting
retains the ride and the pair have a good chance of notching up the hat-trick
today. CONDOR HEROES relished being given a 28-week break as he
has won his last two starts since, both of which were over this course and
distance. The son of Not A Single Doubt is having his peak run today and with
Shaun McGruddy in the saddle once again, the pair should be right there in the
run down to the finishing post.
Race 7
This is a
competitive contest as there are many horses with a decent chance of winning.
The tentative first selection is MANKIND with William Pike in the saddle. He showed
signs of needing his first run back from a 14-week break when finishing third
over the minimum trip on this course. He will enjoy the step up in distance
today as he has won once and finished third twice from five attempts. He should
strip a much fitter horse and from his good draw of three, may be the one to
side with here. GATES OF BABYLON has good consistent form lines to his
credit. He won his last start well over six furlongs on this course. His record
this season is good having won twice, finishing second once and third twice
from eight outings. He does have a wide draw to contend with today, but he will
use his early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy.
Race 8
The main event on
the day is Roma Cup which is a Group 3 event over six furlongs. ANGELIC RULER is a filly taking on the males. She got back to winning ways in a Listed
event in her last start over seven furlongs on this course. The drop in trip
will suit her well as she has won twice and finished second twice from as many
attempts. William Pike knows the daughter of Universal Ruler well and he should
guide her to her seventh career victory. FLIRTINI has produced two
good runs since given a 17-week break. She likes racing on this course having
won three times, finishing second twice and third four times from twelve
outings. Joseph Azzopardi does duty on her peak run and the pair merit healthy
respect.
Race 9
LAVERROD is yet to be unplaced from nine career
starts. He was a winner of his last race over 1100m on this course. The step up
in distance should be of no concern as he has finished third in his only attempt.
Interestingly, leading into this race he has had a barrier trial which he won.
Regular pilot Patrick Carbery is in the irons and the pair should find
themselves in the winner’s enclosure once again. PYM’S ROYALE got back to
winning ways in his last start over six furlongs on this course. He is having a
very good season with a record of three wins, two seconds and a third-place
finish from nine outings. Jockey Mitchell Pateman has been aboard the son of
Husson in nine of his ten career victories. From his mid-field barrier
position, he should go well today.
