International Racing: Ascot – Saturday 25 April 2020

An exciting nine-race programme is scheduled for Ascot on Saturday with a few short-priced favourites that look hard to beat.

The best bet on the card is BLACKWATER BAY in Race 1. He showed very good improvement in his last start when finishing second. He is having his peak run this afternoon and should take a power of beating under William Pike.

Race 1
BLACKWATER BAY showed good improvement in his last start over 1500m on this course. He raced from a mid-field position that day and ran on strongly up the home straight. William Pike and trainer Adam Durrant have formed a decent partnership with a win 28%-win strike rate. The son of Blackfriars is having his peak run this afternoon and should go one better in this line-up. RHYTHM STAR is a filly taking on males. Her last two starts on this course have been good. The manner in which she races suggests that she will enjoy the rise up to the mile this afternoon. She should be one of the leading contenders for the placings.

Race 2
HIP WIGGLE produced a very good comeback run over this distance at Pinjarra Park last time. She has a good record over this trip having finished second twice and third once from as many attempts. She should strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and with William Pike doing duty, she looks very tough to beat. FLOAT OUR BOAT produced a promising debut effort when finishing fourth over seven furlongs. He was given a 23-week break since that run, during which time he would have strengthened up. There should be no concerns with regards to fitness as he produced a decent barrier trial coming into this race. With the natural improvement that is expected, he should pose a big threat to the top choice.

Race 3
CHARLETON EDDIE is lightly raced and has very good form to his credit. He followed up his maiden victory with another good win when going start to finish over the minimum trip on this course. He tries the six furlongs for the first time, but the manner in which he won last time suggests he should have more to come. Regular pilot Patrick Carbery does duty this afternoon and the pair can notch up the hat-trick. STARFIELD IMPACT is a filly taking on the males. She contested in a Group 2 event last time after winning a Group 3 race in her penultimate start. The daughter of Demerit gets the services of a 3kg claiming apprentice which should help her cause. She has large claims in this line-up.

Race 4
CUBALLING won his first two career starts before given a well-deserved 22-week lay-off, during which time he would have strengthened up. Both of those victories came over this distance. The son of Patronize should have no issues with regards to fitness and he has a good chance of keeping his unbeaten record intact. RIVER BEAU just won his last start over this course and distance. He has won once, finished second once and third once from four attempts over this trip. Jason Whiting has a very good record aboard the son of Snippetson and the combination should be the ones to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 5
ANGELIC RULER produced a very good comeback run when returning from a 22-week break last time. She is yet to be unplaced over this distance with a record of two wins, three seconds and two third-place finishes. It is encouraging that jockey William Pike retains the ride and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. FLOWER OF WAR won her last start well over six furlongs on this course. She has an incredible record on this track having won five times and finishing second once from as many outings. Apprentice Chloe Azzopardi is riding at the top of her game and the pair merits healthy respect in this contest.

Race 6
SLICED BREAD has produced two good efforts since given a 22-week break. He should have finished closer in his last start over seven furlongs as he found traffic problems up the straight. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. William Pike has ridden twice for a win and a third-place finish. With a bit of luck in running, he should be very hard to beat in this contest. CRYPTIC LOVE is a filly taking on the boys and she has good recent form to her credit. She likes racing on this course with a record of two wins, three seconds and two third-place finishes from twelve outings. Should the top selection fluff his lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.

Race 7
CAMBIST has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. She was far from disgraced in a Group 2 event in her last start over twelve furlongs. She likes racing on this course having won once, finishing second twice and third once from seven outings. If able to overcome her wide barrier position, she could be the one they all have to beat. PICTURE PERFECT’S last start over twelve furlongs was fair. She settled well back in the early stages and made steady ground up the straight. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. On best form shown, she should be right there in the run down to the wire.

Race 8
MYSTERY MISS got back to winning ways in her last start over a mile on this course. The manner in which she finished off her race that day when running on from last was eye-catching. William Pike has an outstanding record aboard this filly having won six times, finishing second once and third twice from ten starts. She is likely to adopt the same tactics this afternoon and will be mowing down the frontrunners in the run down to the finishing post. RED ARMY is the stable companion of the top selection. He got back to winning ways in his last start over eleven furlongs on this course. It must be noted that William Pike who won on him last time has opted to ride the top selection. The son of Patronize may be one of the leading contenders for the placings.

Race 9
LAVERROD is yet to be unplaced from eight career starts. He was unlucky not to have won his last start over this course and distance as he was held up for a run until the 100m mark. Regular pilot Patrick Carbery does duty this afternoon and with a bit of luck in running, he should get back to winning ways. MANKIND produced some decent form before given a 13-week break. He has won once and finished second once from as many starts over this course and distance. It is encouraging that jockey William Pike retains the ride on his return and the combination should be the ones to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.
