Race 5.

DALAALAAT has consistent formlines to his credit and finished second in his last start over this trip, 1.3L behind the winner, this despite coming three wide into the home straight and then only seeing daylight at the 300M pole. He finished well that day, so from a wide gate nine he is likely to be dropped out of it early and then start picking off the frontrunner over the closing stages. As such, he is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card. NERONE and EPIC DAN renew their rivalry here after the former beat the latter by a short-head in their last clash over 1100M. NERONE showed marked improvement that day when finishing strongly after only getting a split at the 250M mark to collar the latter in the shadow of the post. He was returning from a 23 week break, which is clearly just what he needed. From draw five, he should be right up there when they hit the line. EPIC DAN has a handy draw two and does meet the second choice on 1.5kg better terms, which would normally be enough for the table to be turned, but the former is preferred for the manner in which he finished off that last race and should enjoy the step up in distance. The latter gets the services of ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle. All in all, there should not be too much separating the pair when they reach the winning post.

Race 6.

Although TRAVEST is recorded as finishing fifth in his last outing over seven furlongs, he was only just under two lengths back from the winner. He is seldom too far off the action and come the widest into the home straight in that last effort, but nevertheless finished strongly over the latter stages and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners subsequently winning. He jumps from gate three and could be the one to side with here. MR GEE missed out on his hat-trick when ending up in fourth place last time out over eleven furlongs, just over a length and a half adrift of the victor. He takes a big drop in distance and does returns from a 14 week rest, but he has had the benefit of two barrier trials, finishing fourth in the latest. It should also be noted that he did win over a mile three runs back, so the shorter journey may not be too big of an issue. NICCI’S FLING is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she was held up shortly after the start before recovering well to finish second in her latest outing over seven furlongs, 2.3L back from the winner. She stayed on well that day and from her wideish draw nine, she should be doing her best work late.

Race 7.

SAIGON is a 4yr old filly taking on males, but she followed up her penultimate run victory over seven furlongs with a second spot finish next time out over the same trip, just a short-head behind the winner. She could be considered an unlucky loser that day as nothing really went her way in that she was held up on the turn, hung out over the closing stages and was also denied a run until the 225M nark, before storming home to suffer the narrowest of margins defeat. She jumps from gate seven and will be hoping to make amends today. LINA’S HERO has finished closer to the winner in his last three runs, the latest when third over 1300M, 1.7L back from the victor, despite jumping awkwardly. He is drawn one outside the top pick and has his peak run after returning from a lengthy 45 week absence. In addition, he gets the blinker re-fitted for today’s outing and if this move has the desired effect, he should be a big runner here. LUNCIES has his first run in Australia after arriving from the UK and has his first start since a 23 week break, but he has had the two barrier trials to showcase his well-being. He takes a big drop in distance after having won his last start over twelve furlongs by nearly three lengths, but if not finding the trip too sharp, he should be right up there in the firing line.

Race 8.

LOST AND RUNNING has won all of his four starts to date, two of which were over this distance. He put three and a half lengths between himself and the balance of the field when trotting up last time out over this 1100M sprint. He was slow away that day and was then hampered shortly after the start, but recovered well to lead the field into the home straight before striding clear to record a comfortable victory. He gets gate seven and could prove to be very difficult to topple today. MR MOSAIC jumps from draw five and also showed plenty of early toe to post a win last time out over 1100M by some one and a half lengths when returning from a 19 week rest. That was good improvement from his previous start and he will get 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice to aid his cause. If he is able to confirm that last effort, he could emerge as the biggest threat to the top selection. SUPERIUM was bumped a number of times on the first turn and was last into the home straight as a result, but he stayed on well to end up in ninth spot, but just over two and a half lengths adrift of the winner. The form of that race has stood up well with no less than six runner from that contest winning subsequently. He has his first run since a 20 week break, but has had the one barrier trial to prove his fitness. He is drawn one outside the latter and should be involved in the finish.
