International Racing: Happy Valley – Wednesday 22 April 2020

A competitive nine-race programme is scheduled for Happy Valley on Wednesday. The best bet on the night is MEHBOOB who is in Race 5. He has good consistent form to his credit and meets a weak field.

Best Bet: MEHBOOB (Race 5)
Value Bet: MASTER ALBERT (Race 2)

MEHBOOB should get rewarded for consistency this time around. After a treble at Sha Tin on Sunday, Joao Moreira has now pulled three winners clear of Zac Purton in the Jockey’s Championship. However, Moreira will not be riding at tonight’s meeting while Purton has a full book of rides. He now the opportunity to close the gap or go even go ahead.

Race 1
AURORA STEED’S last start can be completely ignored as it was his first run on the all-weather surface and he had a haematoma on his shoulder. He ran a very good race in his penultimate start over the minimum trip on this course when finishing second. In-form Chad Schofield takes the ride from a good draw and on best form shown, he should be the one they all have to beat. KWAI CHUNG ELITE ran a very good race at Sha Tin over seven furlongs last time. He raced from a handy position that day and stayed on well at the finish. Zac Purton does duty for the first time this evening and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most. FOX CHEUNGER’S last two starts over this distance have been good. He raced three wide on the all-weather surface last time, but stayed on well at the finish. Matthew Chadwick knows the son of Hussonet well and the pair merit healthy respect. SHOW MISSION was making steady progress in his last start, but should have finished closer as he was hampered at the 80m mark. With a bit of luck in running this evening, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post.

Race 2
MASTER ALBERT is much better than his last start suggests as he was blocked from the 400m mark to the 300m mark. He did, however, manage to put in a little dash from the 200m mark. He runs well for Karis Teetan with a record of two wins, two seconds and two third-place finishes from ten outings. With a bit of luck in running, he should get back to winning ways. HAPPY TANGO is a lightly raced son of Eavesdropper who showed some signs of improvement in his last start. He raced from a handy position that day and boxed on well up the straight. It is encouraging that Chad Schofield retains the ride and the pair should be right there in the run down to the wire. OVERSUBSCRIBED has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He was bumped at the start last time, but managed to set the pace before getting caught in the final 50m. The same tactics are likely to be adopted this evening and he may be hard to peg back in the closing stages. HERO TIME ran a good race last time despite reported to have bled. Zac Purton is back in the saddle tonight and if he is able to switch him off early, the pair should fight out the finish.

Race 3
This is an open field and caution is advised. The narrow first selection is LONDON HALL who won his last two starts over ten furlongs at Sha Tin well. He tries the extra furlong for the first time this evening, but the manner in which he races suggests he should not have any problems with the extra distance on offer. Matthew Chadwick retains the ride and he could guide the son of Sebring to a hat-trick of wins. ABOVE was an impressive winner of his last start over ten furlongs at Sha Tin. He won his only attempt over this course and distance five runs back. With there being no stamina doubts, he should throw out a big challenge to the top selection. MAGNETISM is much better than his last start suggests. He won his penultimate start over ten furlongs on this course and if repeating that effort tonight, he should be in with a shout in this field. STIMULATION has fair recent form to his credit. He finished second in his only attempt at this distance and with Karis Teetan doing duty, he has to have a decent chance in this line-up.

Race 4
STAR MAJESTIC’S last two starts over this distance have been good. He was running on well at the finish on a wet all-weather surface last time. Blake Shinn knows him well and the pair should be hard to beat today. ELECTRIC LIGHTNING showed good signs of returning to best form in his last start over this course and distance. He was crowded at the 150m mark that day, but rallied well up the inside running rail. Karis Teetan rides from a handy barrier position and with a bit of luck in running, he has a good chance of going one better tonight. CHARITY GRAND is slowly coming back to form. His form over this distance has been decent having won once, finishing second once and third once from four attempts. In-form Antoine Hamelin is in the saddle this evening and the pair should run into the money here. INVALUABLE showed some signs of returning to best form in his last start. He was running on well at the finish that day to finish two lengths behind the winner. If repeating that effort this evening, he could be involved in the run down to the wire.

Race 5
MEHBOOB is the horse with the best form in this race and looks tough to beat tonight. He runs well on this course with a record of a win, four seconds and three third-place finishes from nine outings. Matthew Chadwick who was aboard the son of Snippetson in his only career win thus far, steps back into the saddle and the pair should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. FARM BUMPER’S last two starts under Chad Schofield over this course and distance have been very good. He was unlucky not to have won his last start as he got off to an awkward start and was hampered at the 800m mark. With a bit of luck in running, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post. DAILY DELIGHT is lightly raced and has produced three fair runs to date. He has not been settling in the running over six furlongs and may enjoy the drop to the minimum distance tonight. Blake Shinn does duty once again and the pair should earn a cheque in this field. WINNING WAYS should have finished closer in his last start over this course and distance. He had to check at the 600m mark and was hampered at the 150m mark. It is encouraging that Zac Purton retains the ride and the pair cannot be ignored.

Race 6
BLOOMING SPIRIT has very good consistent form to his name. Despite not getting off to the best of beginnings last time, he managed to knuckle down and get up where it matters most. He has won twice and finished third once from as many outings over this course and distance. If jumping on terms this evening, he has a good chance of notching up his third career victory. CHARITY WINGS got back to winning ways in his last start over this course and distance. He was bumped at the start that day, but produced a good dash in the final 300m to draw off for the victory, In-form Antoine Hamelin does duty this evening and if able to overcome his wide draw, he should be right there in the run down to the finishing post. TANGEMERE returned to his best form when winning his last start over this course and distance under Zac Purton. He has a good draw this evening and if confirming his recent improvement, he must have a say in this line-up. SNOW AIRJET is lightly raced having just had the four runs to date. He was unlucky not to have won last time as he was hampered at the 300m mark and bumped at the 200m mark. With a bit of luck in running, he should run into the minor money this evening.

Race 7
FORTUNE HAPPINESS has some good form to his credit. Most of his recent starts have been on the all-weather surface, but his penultimate effort on this course was decent when finishing just 1.75 lengths behind the winner. All three of his career wins to date have come over this distance. He does have a wide draw to contend with tonight, but he likes to race up with the pace and should use his early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy. HAPPY GOOD GUYS stayed on well at the finish of his last start over this course and distance last week. Vincent Ho retains the ride tonight and if this run has not come too soon, he should throw out a big challenge to the top selection. LUCKY QUALITY was making eye-catching late progress when finishing fifth in his last start over this course and distance. He has drawn pole position this evening and Zac Purton rides for the first time. He may be able to coax that little bit extra out of the son of Medaglia d’Oro where it matters most. DESTINE JEWELLERY has had excuses in his last two starts, but has not finished too far off the winner. With a bit of luck in running, he may be involved in the fight out to the wire.

Race 8
DANCING FIGHTER was disappointing in his last start after he won two races in a row prior to that outing. He runs well for tonight’s jockey Zac Purton with a record of a win and two second-place finishes from as many outings. On best form shown, the son of Zoustar should take a power of beating. PING HAI GALAXY ran a good race last time when racing handy and staying on well to finish runner-up. He has won once and finish second once from three attempts over this distance. Chad Schofield retains the ride and the pair should be right there in the run down to the finishing post. GOLDEN DASH won his last start over this course and distance well despite reported to have blood in his trachea. Two of his three career wins have come over this distance and the son of Snitzel merits healthy respect. BEAUTY AMIGO is showing signs of returning to best form in his last two starts. He raced from a handy position in his last start, but just ran out of puff in the closing stages. He has a much better draw this evening and can run into the minor money.

Race 9
ALLIED AGILITY was his own worst enemy last time as he hung out in the final 300m. All three of his career wins to date have come over tonight’s distance and if keeping on a straight line, he should be the one they all have to beat. LARSON won his last start well over this course and distance, two weeks ago. He was crowded at the start that day, but picked up the lead at the 300m mark and drew off for the victory. Zac Purton rides for the first time and the pair should be right there in the run down to the wire. CUE THE MUSIC has been campaigning against stronger opposition in recent outings. He takes a drop-in class this evening and from his good barrier position, he could be the one to cause the upset in the final race on the programme. EXPLOSIVE WITNESS should have finished closer in his last start over this course and distance. He was crowded at the start and hampered at the 900m mark before doing his best work late up the straight. With a bit of luck in running, he has a good chance of earning a cheque.
