Having earned a massive eight medals from 11 Comrades Marathons already, Prodigal Khumalo is hopeful that the 2022 edition will be another one to remember.
When did you first start running and when did it become a passion?
I started when I was 18-years-old, coming from soccer, and I was passionate from day one.
How do you prepare for the Comrades?
It takes me six whole months to prepare for the Comrades Marathon, including a few races in between that I use as time trials. I am very old school when it comes to diet. I stick to what works for me, which is carbo-loading when running a long distance; whether it’s training or racing. I also take lots of proteins in-between during the day.
Can you describe the experience of your first Comrades?
My first Comrades Marathon was in 2008. Back then I was a Pacemaker and would stop at 50km, but then we decided to continue with team manager and ended up finishing, but I cramped a lot on the second half because I didn’t have enough mileage.
Which run was your most challenging and why?
2013 I walked from Cato Ridge to the finish line. It was the most challenging for me.
What has inspired you to keep competing?
The camaraderie amongst runners of Comrades Marathon inspires me to keep coming back. The spirit is incomparable
What are your targets and/ or expectations for this year’s race?
This year my goal at the Comrades Marathon is to go and enjoy myself, but most importantly do my best.
How has the Hollywoodbets Athletics Club assisted you in preparing for this year’s Comrades?
Hollywoodbets AC been very supportive in preparation and in assisting us to train at high altitude training camps. They’re one of the best running clubs in the world!
