Going into the final day still needing 178 runs to win with six wickets remaining,  England capitulated as they only 66 runs to their overnight total to be 233 all out to hand the Aussies victory.

Joe Root and Chris Woakes resumed at the crease for the tourists, who still had hopes of chasing down the record target of 354, but they soon fell away as Woakes was caught behind for five.

Root also failed to add to his overnight score of 67 when he edged behind off seamer Josh Hazlewood and all hope of a miracle win left with the England captain.

It did not last long after as Moeen Ali was lbw to Nathan Lyon (2) while left-arm pacer got rid of Craig Overton (7) and Stuart Broad (8).

After taking t he wickets of Mark Stoneman and James Vince on Tuesday, Starc completed his five-wicket haul and the match when he bowled Jonny Bairstow for 36.

After their 10-wicket win in Brisbane in the first Test, Australia can reclaim the Ashes if they win the third Ashes Test, which starts in Perth on 14 December.
