All to play for after exciting DPL week two

The inaugural Dolphins Premier League, presented by Aucor, moved up to Pietermaritzburg this weekend where the results proved how competitive the league is with all eight teams still in the semi-final hunt.

The second round of matches took place at the Pietermaritzburg Oval and at the Varsity Oval with Saturday and Sunday’s action seeing 12 matches played across the two venues where none of the eight sides went through the weekend without losing a game.

At the Oval on Saturday, the Hollywoodbets eThekwini Hurricanes trounced the Jooma Properties Zulu Kings by 90 runs with Durban club stalwart Kyle Buckthorp stealing the show with figures of 5/9 including a hat-trick.

The Aucor Durban Chiefs continued their impressive march when they dispatched the Smartrac East Coast Wizards by 20 runs. Kyle Nipper top scored for the Chiefs with 52 and was well supported by Kushen Kishun, who scored 41.

Nipper then took 3/13 as the Chiefs made it three wins from three games.

In Saturday’s final match at the Oval the Toddler Park Drakensberg Thunder beat the Hollywoodbets eThekwini Hurricanes by six wickets. Blayde Capell’s second half century of the day was topped by Vaughn van Jaarsveld’s 55 while Nash Govender (46) and Zain Patel (30) got their side over the line.

At the Varsity Oval, the Elite Academy Umgeni Rhinos dominated the Drakensberg Thunder to win by 79 runs.

Bruce Kerr continued his good form with the bat with 64 runs as his side posted an imposing 176/4. In reply the Thunder were bundled out for 97, with Matt Luksich and Khalipa Cele both bagging three scalps.

In a low-scoring but exciting affair the AFFA Tugela Sharks defended 91 to beat the Solid Pak PMB Spurs by four runs.

Man of the match Gareth Rall bagged 3/9 which included the competition’s second hat-trick.

Languishing without a win, the Zulu Kings needed to get off the mark and they managed that when they beat the Rhinos by six wickets.

Bruce Kerr scored another half century for the Rhinos, however 4/15 from Xolani Mhleba restricted the Rhinos to 138/9.

In reply the Kings managed to string some partnerships together to get them over the line in the final over of the match.

On Sunday the Solid Pak PMB Spurs played in back-to-back games where they lost to the Durban Chiefs in the first encounter but beat the Drakensberg Thunder in their second game.

The Chiefs posted 153/7 thanks largely to 44 from Tyler Trenoweth. In reply the Spurs got to 145/7 with Kurtlyn Mannikam taking 3/22 to give his side an eight run victory.

In the second game, returning SA ‘A’ star and Hollywoodbets Dolphins opener Sarel Erwee scored 62 as the Spurs defended 163 to beat the Thunder by 34 runs.

The final game at the Oval was a thriller. The East Coast Wizards managed a solid 158/5 from their 18 overs. Sibz Makhanya top scored with 71. In reply the Kings managed 158/6 with Reuben Hattingh’s 57 helping his side come close, but both sides had to settle for three points each for the tie.

At the Oval on Sunday the East Coast Wizards, thanks to a man of the match performance from Dudu Zondo, who scored 49, helped his side over the line against the impressive Tugela Sharks.

Being set 127 to win the game Zondo’s innings was crucial as they managed to win by just three wickets, handing the Sharks their only loss of the weekend.

The Sharks then bounced back emphatically in their next game when 58 not out from Cody Chetty saw them beat the Umgeni Rhinos by six wickets and propel them to the summit of the table.

The Hurricanes then went on to claim their second win of the weekend when Blayde Capel’s 86 not out saw them score 159/9 in their 18 overs.

In reply Tyler Trenoweth scored 47 but Keith Dudgeon’s 3/26 curtailed their chase and they fell just seven runs short.

Over the past weekend KZN Coastals’ Blayde Capell notched up three half centuries, scoring 193 runs at an average of 96.5 and a strike rate of 156. These impressive statistics meant that he was the Player of the Weekend.

The Rookie of the Weekend went to Hilton College’s Gareth Schreuder who is playing for the Jooma Properties Zulu Kings.

Going into the final weekend of fixtures the race for top spot is wide open, however wins on Saturday for the Tugela Sharks and the Chiefs will guarantee them a semi-final berth, considering both sides have a game in hand.

“It was great to see seven of the 12 matches this weekend go down to the final over,” KZN Cricket CEO Heinrich Strydom said.

“The quality and competitiveness of the league has been great and all the teams are still in the competition going into the final week, we couldn’t have asked for a better start to this tournament.”
