India have a potent top-order that is in terrific form with Virat Kohli returning to lead the side.
Rohit Sharma’s reinvention as a Test opener could be bad news for Bangladesh especially if Kohli’s recent run of luck with the toss continues. Mayank Agarwal should reprise the role of Sharma’s partner after a good start against the Proteas.
India have given Shubman Gill a Test call-up, but it seems unlikely that he will play unless the hosts play an extra batsman.
Pace trio Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav have been retained in the squad having impressed against South Africa.
The surface is expected to be batting-friendly to start with before deteriorating later in the game.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh needs to ensure they keep India honest and don’t allow the hosts to dominate them, or the contest could be a short one.
The variation in the India attack will test the concentration of Bangladesh’s inconsistent top order who were poor in the defeat to Afghanistan in the Tiger’s last Test match.
In that Test match, Bangladesh had Afghanistan on the ropes early on and let them off the hook something they definitely cannot afford to do against India.
The responsibility of holding the middle-order together will fall to new Test skipper Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan.
